Try Quizlet and your students will be impressed. Allow Quizlet to fit the needs of your classroom. Try it out by following the guide provided. Quizlet allows you to make the important decisions. Instructor Choice Think about what you want to use Quizlet for in your classroom. Do you want to use it to supplement instruction, as a primary instruction method, or for students to use who desperately need that extra help? Decide if you, as the instructor, will make the sets - ORWill you require your students to make the sets and share with classmates? Advantages of Quizlet - Increased student motivation to complete academic vocabulary lessons FREE Games allow you to create a “competition” in your class One/Done: Make the sets (or have your student create the sets) and you never have to make them again! Organization: Make “class sets” and allow students to join the “class” for access Access: If you have internet access, you can use Quizlet. App : Quizlet does have a user-friendly app that students can use to study on their electronic devices Ease of Use: Anyone can easily create a Quizlet set Differentiation: Printing functions allows you to catch students up who may have missed or be behind in class, needing that extra help Visual Learning – Does allow for pictures to be placed on one side of the card for studying ($15/year) Disadvantages of Quizlet - Access : Students may not have access to the set if they do not have internet access Student Ownership : If the sets are pre-made, students do not make their own “set” Joining: If the sets are private, students will have to “join” (for free) in order to use the set Time Consuming : Getting started can be time consuming if the instructor tries to make all of the sets Educational Applications & Best Practices - Class Exam Study Aid : Students can use the cards to study the important terms for classroom quizzes and tests Reinforcement : Have the students create the sets to make them find the information and make the sets Substitute/Free time: Students no longer can say “I’m done with everything.” They can always study using Quizlet! Final/Cumulative Exam: Study the terms learned six months prior in those final crunch days prior to the final cumulative exam. Class Competition: Award the student who makes the highest score for each set or each game for the unit of study at that time in class Individual Awards: Make a scale where if the students use the tool so much, they receive extra credit Requirement: If students are struggling with key terms or concepts, make the card sets required each week or unit CONTINUE Steps to Accessing and Using a Quizlet Account & Making Classroom Sets Step 1 – Go to http://www.quizlet.com and click on sign-up. Click Sign-In at the top of the right corner if this is your first time! Step 2 – Complete the fields on the “sign-up” form. Complete the field including: Username Password (Retype) Email Terms of Service Step 3 – This is similar to what your homepage will look like. Click on “Add a Class”. Click “Add a class” Note: May look different on homepage Step 4 – Name your class (i.e. Animal Science 2 – Holloman) Step 5 – Once you have classes created and listed to the left, you can begin adding flashcards sets! Click on “Create” at the top of the page. Step 6 – Complete the Set Title, Description, and decide if you want to allow set discussion or not. This will depend on how you will use Quizlet in your class. Step 7 – Decide if you want the set visible to everyone and who has editing rights. I set my flashcards to “certain classes” and I am on the only editor. I will include information on how to have students join in this handout as well. Step 8 – Once you have all of your sets created, you can begin to use the tool in whatever manner you would like. Require the students to use it, make it available if they need it, etc. You can see who in the class has joined by clicking on the “members” tab at the top. Step 9 – You can also see the “set” specific information such as who has completed the assignment, who is the leader in the games, etc. You can also see the student view by clicking on the set. This will allow you to see their options. Step 10 - Students have many options in the manner in which they use the set. These options include: Speller – Type what they hear or what they read on the side of the page. This is a timed test. Students can adjust the rate at which the words are read. Learn – Students are given the definition and have controls for the options to the left. Test – Quizlet creates a test using short answer, multiple choice, and true/false questions pulled from the glossary created for the set. GAMES Scatter – The definitions and words appear “scattered.” Match the word to the definition and the words disappear. This is timed. The instructor can see who has the best score and how many times students use this tool. Space Race – The words appear on the screen. The student will need to type the answer in and hit “enter.” The game is timed and correct/incorrect is recorded. Other Options Print – The instructor or student can use the “print” function for many reasons. The print function allows you to print as an index side card, smaller card, glossary, and many more options. Export – You can also export the set to a format of your choice. Copy – The instructor can copy the “set” to another class. Combine – The instructor can “combine” two sets for one study set.
