21st Century Flashcards
Old School Notecards
Purpose/Overview
Students getting tired of making 30 flashcards a unit? Wanting to enhance student performance on academic
vocabulary cards? Make the move from “old school” index cards serving as study aids and spice up the study process!
Try Quizlet and your students will be impressed. Allow Quizlet to fit the needs of your classroom. Try it out by
following the guide provided. Quizlet allows you to make the important decisions.
Instructor Choice
Think about what you want to use Quizlet for in your classroom. Do you want to use it to supplement instruction, as a
primary instruction method, or for students to use who desperately need that extra help?
Decide if you, as the instructor, will make the sets
- ORWill you require your students to make the sets and share with classmates?
Advantages of Quizlet
-
Increased student motivation to complete academic vocabulary lessons
FREE
Games allow you to create a “competition” in your class
One/Done: Make the sets (or have your student create the sets) and you never have to make them again!
Organization: Make “class sets” and allow students to join the “class” for access
Access: If you have internet access, you can use Quizlet.
App : Quizlet does have a user-friendly app that students can use to study on their electronic devices
Ease of Use: Anyone can easily create a Quizlet set
Differentiation: Printing functions allows you to catch students up who may have missed or be behind in class,
needing that extra help
Visual Learning – Does allow for pictures to be placed on one side of the card for studying ($15/year)
Disadvantages of Quizlet
-
Access : Students may not have access to the set if they do not have internet access
Student Ownership : If the sets are pre-made, students do not make their own “set”
Joining: If the sets are private, students will have to “join” (for free) in order to use the set
Time Consuming : Getting started can be time consuming if the instructor tries to make all of the sets
Educational Applications & Best Practices
-
Class Exam Study Aid : Students can use the cards to study the important terms for classroom quizzes and tests
Reinforcement : Have the students create the sets to make them find the information and make the sets
Substitute/Free time: Students no longer can say “I’m done with everything.” They can always study using
Quizlet!
Final/Cumulative Exam: Study the terms learned six months prior in those final crunch days prior to the final
cumulative exam.
Class Competition: Award the student who makes the highest score for each set or each game for the unit of
study at that time in class
Individual Awards: Make a scale where if the students use the tool so much, they receive extra credit
Requirement: If students are struggling with key terms or concepts, make the card sets required each week or
unit

Steps to Accessing and Using a Quizlet Account
& Making Classroom Sets
Step 1 – Go to http://www.quizlet.com and click on sign-up.
Click Sign-In at the
top of the right
corner if this is your
first time!
Step 2 – Complete the fields on the “sign-up” form.
Complete the field
including:
Username
Password (Retype)
Email
Terms of Service
Step 3 – This is similar to what your homepage will look like. Click on “Add a Class”.
Click “Add a class”
Note: May look different
on homepage
Step 4 – Name your class (i.e. Animal Science 2 – Holloman)
Step 5 – Once you have classes created and listed to the left, you can begin adding flashcards sets!
Click on “Create” at the top of the page.
Step 6 – Complete the Set Title, Description, and decide if you want to allow set discussion or not.
This will depend on how you will use Quizlet in your class.
Step 7 – Decide if you want the set visible to everyone and who has editing rights. I set my
flashcards to “certain classes” and I am on the only editor. I will include information on how to have
students join in this handout as well.
Step 8 – Once you have all of your sets created, you can begin to use the tool in whatever manner
you would like. Require the students to use it, make it available if they need it, etc. You can see who
in the class has joined by clicking on the “members” tab at the top.
Step 9 – You can also see the “set” specific information such as who has completed the assignment,
who is the leader in the games, etc. You can also see the student view by clicking on the set. This
will allow you to see their options.
Step 10 - Students have many options in the manner in which they use the set. These options include:
Speller – Type what they hear or what they read on the side of the page. This is a timed test. Students
can adjust the rate at which the words are read.
Learn – Students are given the definition and have controls for the options to the left.
Test – Quizlet creates a test using short answer, multiple choice, and true/false questions pulled from
the glossary created for the set.
GAMES
Scatter – The definitions and words appear “scattered.” Match the word to the definition and the
words disappear. This is timed. The instructor can see who has the best score and how many times
students use this tool.
Space Race – The words appear on the screen. The student will need to type the answer in and hit
“enter.” The game is timed and correct/incorrect is recorded.
Other Options
Print – The instructor or student can use the “print” function for many reasons. The print function
allows you to print as an index side card, smaller card, glossary, and many more options.
Export – You can also export the set to a format of your choice.
Copy – The instructor can copy the “set” to another class.
Combine – The instructor can “combine” two sets for one study set.
