The centerpiece of JHCIRP’s community outreach is the Johns Hopkins Mobile Safety Center, a joint program run in partnership with the Baltimore City Fire Department. DEPARTMENT GOALS AND OBJECTIVES: The Johns Hopkins Mobile Safety Center ‘s (MSC) mission is to promote home safety for residents of Baltimore City by delivering interactive education and affordable safety products to the community. Under the supervision of the directors named above, the intern will learn about numerous safety topics and receive training to serve as an assistant to the primary injury prevention educator on the MSC. The MSC’s audiences include children, parents, caregivers, and older adults. CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECK REQUIRED? Yes ___ No X INTERNSHIP INFORMATION (How might your organization use and improve a health education student’s skills and knowledge?): Intern will complete some if not all of the following tasks: + Provide direct one-on-on and small group injury prevention education to visitors on MSC at community events + Assist in developing and conducting injury prevention workshops and presentations with small community groups and practitioners + Develop educational materials and quarterly newsletters + Conduct safety product demonstrations and bicycle helmet fittings + Collect visitor data, track sales and services provided, and track distribution of products and educational materials + Assist with tracking inventory of safety products + Conduct literature reviews of new and emerging injury prevention topics INTERN INFORMATION (What are the skills and qualities you seek in an intern?): + Interest in health education and child safety + Comfort interacting with individuals from diverse community groups + Good communication and interpersonal skills + Familiarity with computers, word processing and database systems + Highly desirable: Spanish speaking and writing skills OTHER INFORMATION (Parking problems? Need for night/weekend availability? Things a student should know before an interview?): Cost for parking will not be provided by university, intern may park in garage, on street, or use public transportation such as the metro. We are looking for mature students who are comfortable interacting with diverse audiences. While prior experience is a plus, it is not required.
