Unit 2 Chapter 3 Colonial America Section 1 Early English Settlements • Trading rivalry between Spain and England going on since 1500’s • England secured East coast of North America thru exploration • Sir Walter Raleigh attempted to have first permanent English settlement @ Roanoke – Settlement disappeared.. No one knows what happened…. Jamestown • Sir Walter Raleigh’s failure inspired more settlers • Joint stock company • Company in the business of transporting settlers to the New World Virginia company- brought first settlers to Jamestown Jamestown • 1607- Jamestown is established • Important b/c FIRST PERMANENT ENGLISH SETTLEMENT • Built on peninsula • Settlers had major problems – Swampy land, settlers lazy, used all their food in the first few months, disease, dirty water Jamestown • Captain John Smith – Work or STARVE rule Settlers had a choice, work or die.. Saved Jamestown Disney Real life.. John Rolfe- the TOBACCO KING. Brought tobacco to Jamestown. Married Pocahontas Cash crop= stability and $$ Representative Govt. • In every one of the 13 colonies a REPRESENTATIVE GOVERNMENT was est. • Virginia House of Burgesses-first representative government in colonies • Paved the way for all 13 colonies • Burgesses were representatives elected by rich, white men to make laws for the colony New England Colonies • Puritans/Separatists left Europe b/c of persecution • Pilgrims (separatists) left for the 13 colonies 1620, bound for Virginia..ended up in Massachusetts. • Settled Plymouth • Mayflower Compact- agreement of the men on the ship that made laws for the new colony that were right and just= SELF RULE!!! Native Americans • Squanto and Samoset helped colonists in Plymouth..showing how to fish, hunt – After the English were rude and mean to them. Stealing food, killing.. • English settlers were not welcoming to Indians Massachusetts and other settlements • John Winthrop- brought settlers to Mass. VERY strict Puritan. • Mass. Had an elected assembly like Virginia • No toleration in Mass. Puritan RULE Connecticut and RI • Thomas Hooker- Conn. He didn’t agree with Puritans, so he moved – Fundamental Orders of Connecticut • First constitution in the COLONIES • Roger Williams est. Rhode Island.. A haven for criminals Middle Colonies • New York- England took it over from the Dutch (Holland, Netherlands) • Duke of York, king’s brother, in charge • New Jersey- southern part of NY • Pennsylvania- William Penn (Quaker Oats guy) – Quakers settled here.. Pacifists, didn’t fight, friends with Indians.. Everyone is equal and they were very tolerant Southern Colonies • 1619 African slaves brought to Jamestown • Southern colonies had cash crops • From Maryland to Georgia cash crops were grown. Tobacco, rice, indigo, cotton • Maryland- Lord Baltimore- Act of Toleration granted Protestants and Catholics to worship freely • Bacon’s Rebellion- Bacon led angry settlers to attack Indians that were on “their” land. He and his followers set fire to Jamestown Carolinas, Georgia • Carolinas will split due to crop differences • North- tobacco • South- rice • Georgia- James Oglethorpe brought debtors to the region for a new beginning – – – – No drinking No slaves All the same size farms Rules didn’t last long!!
