Activities for September 17, 2013
Possible Morning Announcement:
Today in public classrooms throughout the United States, students will learn
about The Constitution of the United States of America. The Constitution of the
United States was created at the 1787 Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania. With James Madison's great note-taking skills, this document was
approved by the required nine states in June of 1788.
The Constitution of the United States began to officially function in 1789. The
Constitution of the United States is a very important written document. It is the
supreme law of the United States. No other law, state constitution, federal
legislation, or executive order can conflict, or disagree, with it. Your classroom
teacher will share some additional information on how The Constitution of the

The Virginia Department of Education is providing a new web site this year entitled, Everyday Civics The
Web site highlights civics-related Standards of Learning for elementary, middle, and secondary teachers,
and includes information, pictures, lesson plans, links, teacher resources, and a discussion board. In
addition, the Web site supports the legislative mandates of the Commission on Civic Education. Everyday
Civics is available at http://civics.pwnet.org/. These copyright-protected materials may be reproduced
for instructional purposes in Virginia classrooms.
All schools may determine what kind of educational programs are appropriate for their students. Some
informational resources pertaining to the Constitution that may be useful in planning educational
