3rd Grade Math and Science Welcome to the world of 3rd Grade!! We are already off to an exciting start this year! Here is what you can expect in Math and Science for the next six weeks: Multiplication- we will be introducing the concept of multiplication. Please see the list of TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills) that will be covered in the next six weeks. As you can tell by looking at the list of standards, it is very important for each student to work on memorization of all times tables (multiplication facts) up to 10x10 and also the corresponding division facts (ex. 3x2=6 so 6/3=2). Flash cards can be purchased for a very low price at Walmart and some Dollar Stores. Here are some times table practice apps that you can download to any tablet or smart phone: Times Tables for Kids: Practice and Test Times Tables Master: Lite Flash Card App- Make your own digital flash cards over the facts that are hardest for you. TEKS Covered in the 2nd and 3rd Six Weeks 3.4E represent multiplication facts by using a variety of approaches such as repeated addition, equal-sized groups, arrays, area models, equal jumps on a number line, and skip counting. 3.4F Recall facts to multiply up to 10 by 10 with automaticity and recall the corresponding division fact. 3.4K Solve one step and two step problems involving multiplication and division within 100 using strategies based on objects: pictorial models, including arrays, area models, and equal groups; properties of operations; or recall of facts. 3.5B Represent and solve one-and-two-step multiplication and division problems within 100 using arrays, strip diagrams, and equations. 3.4D Determine the total number of objects when equally sized groups are combined or arranged in arrays up to 10 by 10. 3.4G Use strategies and algorithms, to multiply a 2 digit number by a 1 digit number. Strategies may include mental math, partial product, and the commutative, associative, and distributive properties. Science In Science we will be learn about Energy, Forces and Work. We will learn about different forms of energy such as light, sound, heat, etc, and how these move and change. We will also explore simple machines and forces and how they affect work and energy.
