Judicial Review
• Marbury v. Madison went to the Supreme Court.
• Chief Justice John Marshall declared an act of
Congress unconstitutional.
– Asserts the power of the
Judicial Branch.
• This process is called
Judicial Review.
Hamilton-Burr Duel
• Hamilton thought Burr was dangerous.
• Hamilton supported Jefferson instead of Burr in the
election of 1800.
• Hamilton supported Burr’s opponent in the race for
governor of New York.
• Burr (being the dangerous man that he was) challenged
Hamilton to a duel.
• Hamilton fired in the air (on purpose); Burr fired at
Hamilton.
• Hamilton died.

Louisiana Purchase
• Napoleon of France offered to sell the Louisiana
Territory to the U.S.
• Jefferson had concerns:
– Was it constitutional for him to purchase land?
– Would it be difficult to govern such a large area?
• Jefferson decided to buy it!
• The Louisiana Purchase more than doubled the size
of the U.S.
