AddRan Chairs Meeting
March 2, 2011
3:30pm
Minutes
1. QEP and SACS- Ed McNertney and Catherine Wehlburg
Catherine and Ed discussed the upcoming SACS accreditation process and the requirements
involved. The actual SACS on-site visit will take place in 2013, but before the on-site review, a
committee will conduct an off-site review of our university’s documents and allow us to respond
to any issues they bring up. These reviews will look at the compliance certification document
(which demonstrates our compliance with core requirements, standards, and federal
requirements) and the university Quality Enhancement Plan. The QEP identifies a specific issue
or issues that the university would like to address in the future and how TCU will measure and
implement changes to further those goals. Possible topics for the QEP include ethical leadership,
service-learning, student engagement, and critical thinking. This will be decided soon and
Catherine asked for as much faculty input as possible.
2. Where are they now / Points of Pride / “After the Handshake”
Andy reminded chairs to find out what their alumni are doing and get the information on the
department websites. This information is very helpful in recruiting students and educating
parents and members of the community about what.
3. Internship
Funding is being eliminated for Karen Anisman’s position coordinating internships, and Andy
doesn’t want to drop the ball. Internships are very important for students to gain experience,
and they must remain a college priority.
4. Academically Adrift Lunches
The lunches with faculty to discuss Academically Adrift were successful, and Andy reported
encouraging responses to the issues raised by the book. Faculty care about these issues and are
already focusing on academic rigor and critical thinking skills. This is good news, but AddRan can
always do better.
5. Scharbauer Cases
A display case will be installed under the stairs in the main lobby of Scharbauer Hall during
spring break. This will fill up the space and give faculty a place to display their publications.
Please have faculty drop off anything they would like to display in the Dean’s Office.
6. Laura’s Temp
Jill Deramus has been hired to cover Laura’s maternity leave. She will be out approximately 6
weeks, starting when the baby arrives. Jill has worked at the University of Texas at Arlington,
and attended TCU for part of her undergraduate career. Please welcome her!
7. Development Director
The search for a replacement for Ann McDonald continues. Andy specifically wants to make
improvements in major gifts to the college. Andy will arrange for faculty to meet with the top
candidates and learn more about them.
8. Legislation about sabbatical
Andy mentioned that faculty should be very grateful for sabbaticals because multiple states are
considering legislation to cut them at the public universities. TCU is very lucky!
9. “The World At Night” SOCOM Event- March 22
The Special Operations Command out of Tampa, Florida is going to present “The World at Night”
in the Kelly Center on March 22. AddRan and the World Affairs Council are co-sponsoring the
event and breakfast, and AddRan will purchase 20-30 tickets to allow students and faculty to
attend. Andy particularly wants the ROTC cadets to be able to attend this event.
10. Mike Butler throwing out the first pitch at a TCU baseball game
Mike’s been recruited to throw the first pitch at the March 22 game, so come watch!
