Andy Green is the current holder of the World Land speed record, and the first person to break the sound barrier
on land.
On 25 September 1997 in Thrust SSC he beat the previous record in Black Rock Desert, USA, reaching a speed
of 714.144mph. On October 15, 1997, exactly 50years and 1 day after the sound barrier was broken in aerial
flight, Andy Green reached 763.035mph, the first supersonic record.
As well as holding this record, he is also a member of the Royal Air Force as a pilot and he gained an OBE in the
New Year’s Honours in 1997.
Andy is now working again on their new record attempt to break the 1,000mph mark on land with Bloodhound
SSC.
