oral communication
course competency
“deliver an oral message or
presentation appropriate to the
audience, within the specified
time constraint, and using
appropriate visual aids”
other than the fact that it’s a
competency, why is effective
oral communication important
to engineers?
take a few minutes to record your thoughts.
pair – share

communication
important?
oral presentation types
Informative
describes the design process used by the team in
developing the process/tools used in the Olympic
cauldron project
Persuasive
tries to convince the audience that their team’s process was best
Instructional
explains how to operate the tool the team used to move cups
You will each be giving a
presentation about a
particular manufacturing
process to your teammates
What type of presentation do you think this will be?
presentation musts
• time
• organization /
content
• slide appearance
time
• include enough content to
effectively use your time
• don’t go over time
• practice to meet time
requirement
content/organization
• sandwich structure
• tell a story
• use and discuss graphics

ensure appropriate and
professional slide appearance
in a presentation?

do differently next time
Effectively document ideas through the use
of sketching in a bound notebook

Attempt to Land
Captain Fuchs aircraft was too
high and too close to the airport
to perform a landing so he was
forced to circle the airport until
he could reduce his air speed and
altitude. In attempt to slow his
aircraft he extended the flaps but
only the inner wing flaps
extended because the hydraulic
system to extend the outer flaps
had been damaged when the
engine separated from the wing.
This caused the wing to have a
greater pitch angle when landing.
The sudden drop in airspeed
caused the plane to bank to the
right. In an attempt to save the
plane, Captain Fuchs increased
the engine power, in turn
dooming himself and the crew.

delivers extemporaneous
(not memorized) talk
• doesn’t use note cards
SolidWorks
let’s you take your drawing to the next
level. we’ll begin to get familiar with it
in class next Tuesday.
SolidWorks is linked to 2 course competencies
installed on studio machines and in
computer commons (CNTR 150).
SolidWorks install
to request access for installing it on
your own PC, follow instructions on
the URL below. it works on PCs or
Macs with Boot Camp installed.
this takes a little while to process,
please do this soon.

please get out your laptops or go to a
classroom machine. follow the link
