Directions: All your work should be turned in on the first day of class. The work should be
original. DO NOT cut and paste or reword information from the Internet or other sources. You
may type or handwrite (legibly) your responses.
As you read, complete the following activities...
A. Fire and burning are important symbols in Fahrenheit 451. Make a T-Chart and freeassociate words, thoughts, and feelings that come to mind when you think about fire and
burning. As you read, add to your T-Chart by recording quotes from the book that relate to
either fire or burning. You will need a minimum of 10 entries.
B. Track the word “mirror” and any references to the concept of reflection as you read the
book. Make a list of quotes and page numbers. Be sure to explain what each reference
represents or symbolizes. Use complete sentences.
C. Choose ONE of the following prompts and write a response that is at least three welldeveloped paragraphs in length. Each paragraph must be a minimum of 5 sentences.
1. Explain Bradbury’s purpose in writing Fahrenheit 451. How does the theme relate to your
world?
2. Montag reads Mildred a definition of friendship. Which characters in the novel qualify as
Montag’s friends? Support your ideas with details from the novel.
3. The symbols in Fahrenheit 451 add another dimension to the novel. Explain at least three of
the following symbols: fire, water, war, phoenix, salamander.
D. Storyboard
You will select 2 specific scenes from the novel. You will create a storyboard for each scene.
The storyboard must contain at least 6 boxes, each with pictures, dialogue and color. These
may be done on copy paper or small poster boards.
