Classen School of Advanced Studies Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) Board Meeting Minutes August 25, 2010 Present: Christi Savage, President Christy Zelly, Parent/Teacher Liason Dixie Hendrix, President-Elect Lou Kohlman, Bylaws Sherri Chancellor, Secretary Penny Johnson, Teacher Appreciation Sean Ting, Treasurer Angi Shaffer, Teacher Appreciation Valerie Harris, Principal Brenda Savinoha, Merchandise Pam Newby, MAPS Chair Liz Hull, Arts Festival Samantha Zelly, STUCCO Rep Lori Carroll, Membership Tracy Crenshaw, Volunteers Betsy Rey Akeman, Directory Call to Order The CSAS PTSA Board Meeting (held at CSAS) was called to order by President Christi Savage at 11:30 a.m. Minutes from the previous Board meeting were unavailable. President’s Report Christi Savage outlined her goals for PTSA this year: 1) 100% membership for PTSA (Current enrollment is 952 students so the goal for PTSA membership is 952 or more); 2) PTSA is not about fundraisers but support of students and teachers (A letter will go out to families this week requesting a commitment from each family for a $20 monthly donation); 3) bring back teacher grants of $100 (The teacher must be a member of PTSA). Each committee chair was asked to fill out a Plan of Work form to be due at the next Board Meeting. PTSA District Council meetings and Oklahoma City Public Schools Board meetings should be attended by a member of the Classen PTSA who will report back to the Board. A sign up sheet was circulated. Open House is August 31 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. PTSA will sell pizza and merchandise form 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. The format of Open House will be come-and-go rather than on a schedule due to the MAPS construction. Treasurer’s Report Sean Ting described the Plan of Work and said it was necessary for committee chairs to complete in order to construct the budget for the year. Principal’s Report Valerie Harris reported that the teachers were very appreciative of breakfast and lunch provided by the PTSA during the week before school started. Administrators are spending an hour each day in the classroom to better connect with teachers and students. The District budget cuts have removed the webmaster and Mr. McAdoo is working to reestablish teacher websites. Picture day is Monday August 30. While the MAPS construction is continuing, students have adapted well. A representative of the MAPS team will be at the PTSA general meeting to answer questions. Four rooms still do not have airconditioning Committee Reports Reflections Dixie Hendrix described the Reflections Program as an arts competition sponsored by local, state and national PTA for the past 40 years. Information will be sent to students about the competition. Scholarships and prizes are available at each level of competition. Membership Chair Lori Carroll reported that so far membership includes 22 teachers and 89 parents and students. These numbers do not reflect those who signed up at schedule pick-up. Membership will have a table at Open House. Key fobs for Jamba Juice discounts will be given to all members. Other member benefits are available on-line at PTA.org. Teacher Liasons Christy Zelley presented a list of teachers still needing liaisons. This information will also be in the newsletter. Communications Dixie Hendrix reported that the Communication committee will be meeting Thursday September 2, 2010, at CSAS Volunteers Tracy Crenshaw is in need of volunteers for Open House. Arts Festival Liz Hull reported that the banners for the Arts Festival will be completed before Christmas. Student work can be sold at the Arts Festival for 50% commission. Fifth grade parents of local elementary schools will be encouraged to attend. New Business Board meetings and General meeting dates were set as follows Board meetings (all at 11:30 a.m. at CSAS), Wednesday, September 8; Wednesday, October 13; Wednesday, November 17; Wednesday, January 12; Wednesday, February 2; Wednesday, March 2; Wednesday, April 6; Wednesday, May 4. General meetings: Thursday, September 9, 6:00 p.m.; Thursday, November 18, 7:00 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Thursday, January 13, 2:30 p.m.; Thursday, March 3, 6:00 p.m.; Thursday, May 5, 6:00 p.m. Discussion centered around traffic issues during drop-off and pick-up times. Ms. Harris suggested thking these concerns to the Campus Safety Committee which meets next Wednesday afternoon. Old Business There was no old business.
