(Essere & Avere) and ASK the students to practice their pronunciation Development WRITE UP: Essere and Avere conjugations on the whiteboard as well as popular verbs used in the past tense (visto, preso, mangiato, giocato e dormito etc…) HAND OUT: Passato prossimo worksheet EXPLAIN That the first 5 questions are asking you if the sentence requires the use of either essere or avere and the next set of 5 questions is asking you to complete the sentence with the present perfect tense. ELLICIT the missing words from the worksheet (below). As students write the word ASK for the English sentence translation. Passato Prossimo Worksheet 1. CHECK the students have the correct auxiliary verb (essere or avere) as well as the proper past participle (ato, -ito, -uto) Development 25 mins ASK: Who keeps a journal? Who has and/or writes in their diary? SAY: Many teenagers also enjoy writing in a diary or keeping a journal of their day to day lives. Hand out printed pictures of both the diary of Anne Frank and Lisa Simpson The diary of Anne Frank One of the most famous diaries is that of Anne Frank. Anne Frank depicted her life in hiding during World War II through her personal diary. The diary described life with her family and four friends in Amsterdam during German occupation. Lisa Simpson’s Diary The Simpson’s eldest female sibling keeps a diary entry of everything, her thoughts, her feelings, her annoying big brother Bart and her not so secret, feeling towards Milhouse. ASK the class to divide in groups of three Activity consists of: ‘cut and paste’ exercise, Italian recount structure sheet, Italian recount (Italian & English versions) HAND OUT ‘cut and paste’ exercise and Italian recount structure sheet to each group ASK students to highlight each use of the passato prossimo. REVIEW the verbs students have identified. Correct any wrong suggestions. Suggest where missed verbs may be (get them to find them – don’t just give them the answer). One group at a time. EXPLAIN the ‘cut and paste’ task, linking identifiable features back to PowerPoint presentation. Groups can use English translation as a prompt. REVIEW answers with class, explaining significance of each section of the recount as you go. 10 Minutes Homework CHOOSE your favourite recount (can be a page or two from your own diary or a recount from a book or website) & TRANSLATE recount into Italian. 1 min 1 min
