There was no distinction in their votes as to which vote went to the President and which was designated for a VP. The candidate with the most votes would become President, and the candidate with the second highest total would become Vice President. With the rise of political parties in 1796, flaws began to be seen in the system. Go To Section: 1 2 3 4 5 Chapter 13, Section 3 ELECTION of 1800 - A Big Mess • Jefferson and Burr – running mates - ended in a tie with 73 votes each. • The House of Representatives had to decide the election against Jefferson's own running mate. • The House of Representatives picked Jefferson to be the President in 1800. Pinckney 64 Votes Burr 73 Votes •Recall – Top vote getter becomes president and second place gets vice presidency. Jefferson and his running mate TIED!!!
