Fruit Body Planes
Name(s):_____________________________________________
Period: _______________
Introduction: Planes divide the body or organs into sections to observe internal body
structures. When you study a body region, you will often view it in section, meaning that you look at
only one flat surface of the 3‐D structure. It is important to know the plane of the section so you can
understand the anatomical relationship of one part to another.
Pre‐Lab: Define the following words and label the planes in Figure 1.
1. Midsagittal Plane:
____________________________________________________________________________
2. Sagittal Plane:
____________________________________________________________________________
3. Frontal Plane:
____________________________________________________________________________
4. Transverse Plane:
____________________________________________________________________________
Procedure:
1. Wash the 4 apples with water and then dry your apple with a paper towel.
2. Using a Sharpe write a large letter “A” (for anterior) on the front of the apples and
write a large letter “P” (for posterior) on the back of the apples for differentiation.
3. Using the “knife” cut one apple on the midsagittal plane.
a. Observe the appearance of the apple and draw it on the table below.
4. Using the “knife” cut one apple on the sagittal plane.
a. Observe the appearance of the apple and draw it on the table below.
5. Using the “knife” cut another apple on the frontal plane.
a. Observe the appearance of the apple and draw it on the table below.
6. Using the “knife” cut a different apple on the transverse plane.
a. Observe the appearance of the apple and draw it on the table below.
7. When done with your drawings, ask your teacher to observe your apple.
a. Keep sections together to form a whole apple.
b. Teacher Signature: _________________________
8. Eat apple (if you want).
9. Rinse off “knife”, throw away any trash, get a wet wipe and clean off your lab table.

Concluding Questions:
1. The ____________________ plane divides body or organ into right and left sections.
2. The ____________________ plane divides body or organ into anterior and posterior
sections.
3. The ____________________ plane divides body or organ into superior and inferior
sections.
*Points will be deducted from all group member’s grade if you are goofing off during the
lab AND/OR you do not clean up your lab area after you are done the lab*
