Creating a Land Use Map in ArcGIS Online
1. Once you have created an account and signed in, choose the “map” icon at the top of your
screen. This should open up a map of the world.
2. Add map notes by clicking the “add” button and choose “map notes”.
Call your map notes “land use” and use the tag “hhs”.
3. Choose the “freehand area symbol
and use it to outline the various locations of land
use around town. I would use the following colour scheme.
Blue: commercial
Red: residential
Orange: Industrial
Green: open space / parks
Purple: institutional (government, religious etc)
* leave all transportation as the default map
*Outline general areas based on the land use type. Do not go for exact outlines as that will take
too much time. Be as accurate and quick as you can in your outlining.
* Start in the core of town and work your way out.
4. Once finished outlining most of town, complete the analysis questions.
ANALYSIS QUESTIONS:
1. Which Land use covers the majority of land in Huntsville? List the 6 land uses by the apparent
amount of space occupied by each.
