• The bakufu = Japan’s system of
government during the Tokugawa period,
based on a military leader, the Shogun
• Baku-han = the division of power between
Japan’s national leader, the Shogun, and
leaders of regions or han, the Daimyo
• Daimyo = feudal lord. He ruled a region or
han of Japan
• Alternate attendance: the system of
compulsory residence by the daimyo in Edo
during alternate years.
• Russia, Britain, France apply pressure for
trade treaties
• Financial strain on Samurai and Daimyo
• Ronin
• Conflict between Daimyo and Shogun
