BSED History/Social Studies Advising Worksheet, March 1, 2012 3 ADMISSION INTO THE PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION TEACHER PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS Applications to the Professional Education Unit at NAU are submitted to Student Services between February 1-15 and September 1-15 of each year. Students are required to apply at least one semester before curriculum and methods education courses (History 330: Teaching and Learning History and Geography and History 306: Practicum in the Schools, etc.) are planned (generally applications are done at the end of the sophomore year). Applications are available online from the Student Services Office, Eastburn Education Building (#27) room 101, (928) 523-2145: http://coe.nau.edu/student_services/ To apply you must meet the following: REQUIREMENT 45 semester hours of course work completed at time of application and they must include the following ENG 105 or equivalent with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 Completed MAT 110, 114 or acceptable equivalent with at least a “C” Completion of at least three (3) hours of content major course work Completion of History 205 with a minimum of a “B” and History 206 with “pass” EDF 200—Intro to Education or acceptable equivalent with at least a “C” Cumulative 2.5 GPA Declared major A completed Recommendation Form (included with application) by someone who has directly observed your work with children or adolescents within the age group of pre-school through high school. The work experience may be either voluntary or paid but must have occurred in a structured setting for a minimum of fifteen hours. Acceptable recommendations may come from individuals who have observed your work as a camp counselor, swimming instructor, religious education instructor, volunteer in a classroom or another similar setting. Home child-care (baby-sitting, nanny) or peer-tutoring can not be used for the recommendation. Family and personal friends are not considered professional references. Professors cannot be used as references unless they have directly observed your work with children or young adolescents. Grade point average of at least 2.5 in your entire Northern Arizona University course work in order to graduate. This requirement applies to all B.S.Ed. majors at Northern Arizona University. SIGNATURE ASSESSMENT REQUIREMENT Candidates in the History/Social Studies Education program are required to demonstrate content knowledge, pedagogical knowledge and skills, and professional knowledge to be eligible to enter student teaching or internship placements. Content, pedagogical, and professional knowledge and skills are demonstrated through candidate performance on key assessments embedded in the HIS 330, HIS 430, BME 437, EPS 325, and ECI 495C courses.
