What is TMAL?
Created to help groom High School students for:
 success on the ACT, SAT and other
standardized tests
 success in college freshman math/science
courses.
Reinforces knowledge of Black history and
inventors.
Two sections
 tutorial sessions
 competitions.

The most important component of the program
Alumni and collegiate volunteers work with PCI
students to develop math and science skills and
to expand knowledge of Black inventors
Sessions continue throughout the NSBE year
whether the students win in the competitions or
not

Pre-Assessment Test
All students participating in the program must
complete a Pre-Assessment test
Used to track student progress
See the TMAL toolkit for a copy of this test
NATIONAL SOCIETY OF BLACK ENGINEERS
Progress Assessment Test
10 problem individual tests given to each
member of each team (30 minutes)
Initiated at the beginning of each competition to
monitor the progress of the students
Used to gauge how successful the training
sessions were prior to the competition
Regional TMAL Coordinator will grade the PAT
tests

Engineering Contest
Engineering problem based on a real-life
situation (60 minutes)
Tests the teams’ ability to work together and use
mathematics/science to solve a real-world
problem

Quiz Bowl Competition
Jeopardy-style competition (2 hours)
Teams compete against each other to answer
questions in the following subjects:
