EV Resort Lesson Plan — Fall 2014 Overall Objective: Students will play immersive language games and participate in cooperative competitions to practice vocabulary and sentence patterns relevant to going to the beach and a resort. Required Learning Materials: -Under the Sea Song -Jaws danger music -Poster with rules in English -Shark hat -Print-out sea creature icons, 3 for each icon (fish, octopus, jellyfish, shark, turtle, trash, alternative: crab, squid, dolphin, whale) -buckets x2, fishing poles x2, life jackets x2, boats x2, paddles x2, volleyball x2 -flashcards representing each of above boat objects to give as rentals (3 flashcards for each item -beach ball with pictures of sea creatures; beach ball with pictures of boat objects -money -paper at kiosk saying the sell value of each sea-creature icon -chart saying how much each boat object costs to rent a -two wooden kiosks -13 crosswords per session -stamps -passports (each student should come in with a passport) Incentive System: All of English Village will use a stamp system where students are awarded stamps in their passport in between lessons. Stamps may be awarded for: participation and volunteering; winning games; completing crossword activities; good behavior. No more than 12 stamps can be rewarded per session. Stamps may be redeemed for prizes that are to be determined on a weekly basis for each two-day English Village program. Activities (time) 1A Student and Teacher Introductions (3 minutes) 1B Morning only: Rules Review (3 minutes) 1C Sharks and Sea Creatures Game (10-12 minutes) 1D Bucket Relay (10-12 minutes) SESSION 1 Procedure Teachers will introduce themselves and ask students their names. Then, teachers split students into teams by having them draw one of two sea creatures from the bucket. Teachers will TPR + call and repeat each rule briefly. Each round there is a shark and a group of sea creatures. The shark faces the wall, unable to see the sea creatures who try to run by to get to the other side. Before each round, every player becomes a sea creature and does the sea creature’s TPR. During each round, the students will constantly repeat the name of the sea creature as they run by. If a shark catches a creature, the student is out for one round and the teachers explain that “The Shark eats a (starfish).” Optionally, students may become the shark. MODEL GAME FIRST. Students line up in two teams. Two people from each team will run up to the water and “fish” by leaning over the dock and picking up a sea creature vocabulary icon. They will return to the bucket, exclaim “I caught a _________.”, then sit down. The next person in line may then run. The team all Vocab -What is your name? -My name is ______. -Hi ________. Students line up in two teams. 1E Fishing Pole Two people from each team will Relay run up to the water and fish a (10-12 minutes) vocabulary icon out of the water with a fishing pole. Then, they will sell what they fished to someone at the rental kiosk (prices will be listed on a sheet of paper at the kiosk). The teacher ask what they caught, they will way “I caught a _________.” If kids are advanced enough and time allows, they may take on the role of the teacher and ask the question to the next student in line. Students will receive a stamp and 1F STAMPS/BREAK complete a word search activity WORD-SEARCH for more stamps. ACTIVITY Activities (time) 2A TPR Vocab Learning (5 minutes) 2B Kinesthetic Object-Call Vocab Game (5-7 minutes) 2C Renting Roleplay with real money (8-10 minutes) SESSION 2 Procedure One teacher holds object while the other performs TPR. Students mimic TPR while repeating. Eventually, teacher performs TPR without saying the word, but students copy TPR and say the word. Students line up in two teams. One teacher performs an items TPR. First person in line from each team runs to the object, picks it up and says its name. To start, each teacher puts on a lay and takes a kiosk. Students split up and line up at either kiosk. Teacher asks what they would like to rent, student responds with what they would like to rent based on what they can afford. Teacher gives students the corresponding card(s). Yikes) -Money -Chart with cost of objects Teachers start at kiosk wearing lays. Students split into two teams. First student of each line runs up. The teacher asks what they would like to rent, then the student asks to rent one object (with or without moneyoptional). After giving them the card, the student takes the teacher’s lay then plays the seller, and asks the following student who runs up what they would like to rent. After a student has been both the customer and the seller, they sit at the end of the line. For the last student, each teacher will rent something as well, so each student plays both roles. The team with everyone sitting down first wins. MODEL FIRST. Students sit on either side of 2E Volleyball Game volleyball net. Each side starts (5-10 minutes) with either the sea creature volleyball or the boat item volleyball. Each turn, each side exchanges volleyballs. The student on each side that catches the volleyball chooses a sea creature (if they get the sea creature ball) or a boat object (if they get the boat item ball) and says “I caught a _____” or (I would like to rent a ____”. This is not a race, so teachers may help students each time they receive a ball. If this is too challenging, teachers may only ask students to say one of the objects. Students will receive a stamp and 2F STAMPS/BREAK complete a word search activity CROSSWORD for more stamps. ACTIVITY 2D Renting Swap Relay (8-10 minutes) -Same as 2C. -Same as 2C. -Sea creatures and “I caught a _____.” -Boat objects and “I would like to rent a ______.” -Two beach balls, one with pictures of sea creatures, another with pictures of boat objects. If there is room, each volleyball may also have its expression (sea creatures: “I caught a _____”; boat objects: “I would like to rent a _____.” -Reviews all vocab from all lessons -Crosswords -Stamps -Passports SESSION 3 Procedure Students line up in two lines. One student from each line sits in a boat, which is surrounded by sea creatures and objects. Two teachers stand in the middle. Each teacher says to their line, “I need a ____.” The first student in line runs to the boat. The student in the boat finds the object and gives it to this student. This student runs the object to the teacher saying “ I have a ____.” The first student to finish wins a point for their team. Then, rotation: -Student in boat goes to the back of their team’s line -Student who ran the object takes the teachers play and performs the “ I need a ____” role for their team” -Teacher or student who just played the “I need a ____” role goes into the boat. The game continues in this fashion until it ends. To make it more challenging, teachers can require students to retrieve the objects both teams ask for. MODEL FIRST. See video demonstration at this link. Teachers will stand in front of 3B Sea Song students and teach the song “ hole (15-20 minutes) in the middle of the sea (see below). Each time an object is introduced, it is added to the song. Each time an object needs to be chosen, the students may choose it. Each time an object is added, teachers line up the objects so students may see the line of objects and not forget the order of the song. See video at this link. 3C STAMPS “There’s a hole in the middle of the sea, there’s a hole in the middle of the sea. There’s a hole, there’s a hole, there’s a hole in the middle of the sea. There’s a blank in a hole in the middle of the sea…There’s a ______ on a ______ in a hole in the middle of the sea etc etc”. Students will receive their final stamps. -Stamps -Passports
