IAB/Faculty Session MAE 2 MAE/Industry Collaboration Overview • We would like to improve MAE’s joint research programs with industry • Actionable plans to move forward 1. IAB Members: Identify Executive-Level contacts that can help make this happen 2. All: Identify past (or present) successful & relevant examples of University/Industry collaboration and emulate 3. MAE/UCLA: Access internal knowledge (ITA, OIP, etc.) and act on above information and advice, follow through 4. ? • Considerations/Challenges – IP, ITAR, Project/Student life cycles – ? IAB/Faculty Session MAE 3 MAE/Industry Collaboration Comments from previous meetings • Joint proposals • Letters of support • IP and ITAR restrictions – need to work through UCLA ITA (see backup slide) • MAE needs to: – More effectively market its research strengths – More effectively announce research achievements • Industry conferences – E.g., Lockheed Martin Fellows Conference IAB/Faculty Session MAE 4 MAE/Industry Collaboration Other thoughts • Benefits to Industry – Recruitment – IP development and advancement – Research • Benefits to MAE – Student and faculty support – Meaningful, impactful, “industry-motivated” research – Industry co-advisors IAB/Faculty Session MAE 5 Student & Dept Support • MAE would like to use Industry-Sponsored to support exception students, researchers, and the dept/faculty • Graduates & Undergraduates – Fellowships, scholarships, internships – Need to ensure connection to industry sponsor • Post doctoral researches, research scientists – Relatively flexible and faster turnaround – Untapped resource for collaboration? • Department/Faculty – – – – Contributions Endowed chairs Research Initiatives Proposal collaboration, support, in-kind IAB/Faculty Session MAE 6 Department Ranking • MAE is top 20, but should be top 10 – How do we address aspects of MAE that will lead to this rise? • MAE needs to: – Grow • Especially in Aerospace • Endowed chairs help considerably – Advertise/market its achievements – Communicate strategically and deliberately with people that influence rankings (e.g., chairs of other departments) IAB/Faculty Session MAE 7 Curricula • Comments from previous meetings – – – – – – Fundamental courses are appropriate Software tools Statistics and probability System Engineering Technical writing Too many adjunct in aerospace IAB/Faculty Session MAE 8 Action Items 1. ? IAB/Faculty Session MAE 9 BACKUP SLIDES IAB/Faculty Session MAE 10 Institute of Technology Advancement (ITA) • ITA Supports Three Types of Research Activities: – Transitional Research • Transitional research focuses on demonstrating technical feasibility of technologies and reducing risk in the transition from the laboratory to market. Transitional research can be funded by either government or industry. – Developmental Research • Developmental research focuses on innovative ideas for new applications and emerging markets. Ultimately, developmental research could result in a spin-off company funded by leveraging various sources such as SBIR/STTR grants, development contracts, debt financing, and venture capital. – Near-Term R&D Support to Industry • ITA can also facilitate near-term research and development projects that support industry needs by leveraging its flexible infrastructure to enable access to university expertise. ITA can enable industry research support through service agreements. IAB/Faculty Session MAE 11
