Gordon State College is committed to making reasonable efforts to assist individuals with
disabilities in their efforts to access a high quality post-secondary education. Gordon State College
will provide reasonable accommodations for persons with documented qualifying disabilities in
accordance with the policies of the University System of Georgia and Gordon State College. If
you have a disability and feel you need accommodations in this course, you must present a current
letter to me from Accessibility Services, indicating the existence of a disability and the approved
accommodations. To register a disability contact Accessibility Services, Student Center, Room
212, 678-359-5585 under the direction of Mrs. Laura Bowen. Call for an appointment with Mrs.
Bowen for documentation review and assessment for an accommodation. Upon approval, you will
be given a letter stating the accommodations allowed, which your professor will sign and you
return to Mrs. Bowen. Make sure to apply early in the semester for these accommodations since
they begin upon date of approval from Student Counseling and Disability Services office and not
beforehand.
Title IX
Gordon State College is committed to providing an environment free of all forms of discrimination
and sexual harassment, including sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence and
stalking. If you (or someone you know) has experienced or experiences any of these incidents,
know that you are not alone. All faculty members at Gordon State College are mandated
reporters. Any student reporting any type of sexual harassment, sexual assault, dating violence,
domestic violence or stalking must be made aware that any report made to a faculty member under
the provisions of Title IX will be reported to the Title IX Coordinator or a Title IX Deputy
Coordinator. If you wish to speak with someone confidentially, you must contact the Counseling
and Accessibility Services office, Room 212, Student Life Center. The licensed counselors in the
Counseling Office are able to provide confidential support.
Gordon State College does not discriminate against any student on the basis of pregnancy,
parenting or related conditions. Students seeking accommodations on the basis of pregnancy,
parenting or related conditions should contact Counseling and Accessibility Services regarding the
process of documenting pregnancy related issues and being approved for accommodations,
including pregnancy related absences as defined under Title IX.
Cell phone policy: Students are expected to turn their cell phones off or on vibrate before the
start of class. Cell phones must be put away during quizzes and exams. Students who use cell
phones during exams will receive a zero for the test grade.
Student Absence and Tardiness Policy: Students will not be able to make up missed grades
due to absence or tardiness. If absence is unavoidable, the student must be excused by the
instructor in advance in order to make up any missed grades. Students who miss class because of
an urgent unavoidable medical reason must provide a note from a doctor in order to make up a
grade. The makeup assignment will not be the same as the assignment that was missed and must
be taken at the convenience of the instructor. Students must take the Final Exam on the
designated date and time.
Lab Attendance: If you miss more than 2 labs, you will receive a failing grade for this course.
Safe Space Program Advocate: Respect toward others is the primary rule when meeting
classroom requirements. Discriminatory, bullying, and harassment of others will not be
tolerated. If actions occur, you well be dismissed from class.
Academic Dishonesty/Plagiarism: All work, exams, and labs (even when working in groups) is
expected to be your own. Plagiarism and cheating are serious academic offences, which will
result in a mark of zero for that assignment for ALL PARTIES INVOLVED. If the offence
is deemed by the instructor to be severe enough, plagiarism and/or cheating may result in
failure of the course. (If you commit multiple offences during the course, it is highly likely that
you will be assigned a grade of F). The incident, as per college procedures, will be reported to the
Department Chair, and the Vice President of Student Affairs and/or the Associate Vice President
of Academic Affairs and/or the Provost/VP of Academic Affairs, and/or Dean of the Faculty. In
cases where further action is warranted, a recommendation to that effect will be made to the
Vice President of Student Affairs, the Associate Vice President of Academic Affairs, the
Provost/VP Academic Affairs and/or the Dean of the Faculty.
Plagiarism and cheating will not be tolerated under any circumstances. Please familiarize
yourself with the following documentation: The Student Code of Conduct specifically Section
B – Academic Dishonesty for your responsibilities and to what qualifies as academic dishonesty
here at the college. Also see the Academic Dishonesty Policy for the procedure to be followed
when academic dishonesty is discovered AND the correct procedure to appeal against the decision
made by the instructor. The Merriam – Webster Dictionary defines plagiarism as “to steal and pass
off (the ideas or words of another) as one's own: use (another's production) without crediting the
source”. However, plagiarism is more than that in science, it is using someone else’s words or
ideas, even with the proper citations, if you have not paraphrased (i.e. put it into your own words
that are significantly different from) the original wording and/or accurately captured their meaning
you have plagiarized.
Service-Learning Project: Students will work in a group with 4 classmates and participate in 4
hours of community/volunteer service that is biology related. Recommendations will be
provided. Proof of service participation and a 3-5 page paper will be required from the group
and is worth 130 points. See guidelines for group work, paper, and grading rubric.
