Meet our Prototype User, Jackie
Jackie…
 Has 3 children (Carrie, 15; Johnny, 8;
Charley, 4)
 Works part-time at Barnes & Noble
 Has a husband who works full-time
 Rushes kids to soccer practice, piano
lessons, orthodontist, daycare, etc.
 Is a good driver, but gets lost frequently
 Is often distracted by unsatisfactory
technology
Addressing Existing Technology
 Technologies to Address:
 GPS: Jackie finds it difficult to input locations and use her GPS’s touch
screen navigation while she’s driving. With three young kids in the car
and a hectic schedule, she worries about the danger of distracted
driving.
 OnStar: Jackie likes the OnStar system in her GMC van, but she is
looking for a system that gives her more advanced warnings during
navigation, is more flexible to changing conditions – traffic, road,
emergency vehicles – and has visual cues.
 Technologies to Incorporate
 Park Assist: Jackie drives a van and has difficulty parking in small
spaces. She yearns for better visibility when parking and a more acute
knowledge of space availability.
 Bluetooth voice dialing: Jackie’s husband uses Bluetooth automated
dialing in his car. She doesn’t need hands-free calling capabilities, but
she admits it would be safer for her and her children.
SPECTRE:
Augmented Reality behind the Wheel
 AR Navigation: Spectre’s combination voice-recognition software and consoleembedded touch screen allows Jackie to either input locations manually before
driving or input them verbally while on the road. Spectre finds routes to users’
designated locations and digitally augments a yellow line (like the yellow “first
down line” seen on televised football games) that marks the correct path.
Locations can be programmed, named, and saved in Spectre’s memory database.
The navigation system is also aware of congested traffic, emergency vehicles, and
construction zones, all of which are identified by Spectre’s AR technology.
 Searches: Users can search for specific locations or generic places (gas stations,
coffee, etc.) and Spectre will identify possible locations via AR. Users are then given
the opportunity to choose one and get an AR route to it. Spectre then highlights the
destination in green to signify location. The technology also includes the ability to
‘favorite’ destinations for easy routing.
 Parking Pal: Parking Pal utilizes input knowledge of the car’s dimensions as well as
knowledge of the lot’s layout to scan for available spaces. It then highlights these
spaces so users can easily identify open spots. Further, its parallel parking feature
projects illuminated planes to set boundaries of how far the car can move forward
or backward (including a loud noise when you breach the planes) as well as display
parameters for parking safely.
 Automated Dialing: Users have the option to input the contact information of
people they call frequently. It doesn’t incorporate AR, but promotes the hands-free
and distraction-free safety features Jackie desires.
A Day in the Life of Jackie
With 3 kids, Jackie always has a busy day. This includes taking Carrie and Johnny to
school, Charley to daycare, and then picking each up in the afternoon. Her two
oldest are involved in after-school activities (i.e. soccer practice/games) which keep
them busy. Jackie balances all this while also working part-time at Barnes & Noble.
Due to all this running around, Jackie has a tendency to get lost and distracted by the
technology in her van.
Spectre Finds Johnny’s Game
To get Johnny to his
soccer game, Carrie
looked up the park’s
name, and Jackie
activated Spectre
with a voice
command and a
request: Locate Pine
Tree Park. Spectre
found the location,
identified it via green
AR light, calculated
the route, and
projected its
trademark yellow line
to direct the way.
Ortho  Daycare, and Back
Jackie knows how to get to Carrie’s orthodontist appointment from
home, but not from Pine Tree Park. She says, “Locate Carrie’s
Orthodontist” – a preset and pre-named location – and Spectre
finds an appropriate route. Jackie and Carrie arrive perfectly on
time. Jackie even has time to pick up Charley from daycare.
Johnny Forgets his Cleats!
Johnny borrows a phone and calls Jackie from his soccer warmups. He has forgotten his cleats at home! Using Spectre’s route
again, Jackie immediately turns around and makes her way
back home as quickly and safely as she can.
A Fire Truck Looms…
As Jackie, Carrie, and Charley speed home, Spectre uses AR to
digitally identify an emergency vehicle headed their way. Jackie
requests a ”Re-route,” and Spectre paves a different path with the
yellow route lines.
Spectre Bests Rush Hour Traffic
After retrieving Johnny’s cleats from home, the group rushes to his
soccer field. All of a sudden, Spectre alerts Jackie to some
congested traffic in her path. Spectre suggests a re-route and Jackie
agrees. A new route is highlighted on the road, allowing Jackie to
circumvent the traffic.
Spectre Finds a Parking Spot
Jackie arrives at Johnny’s
game without a moment to
spare. She requests that
Spectre’s Parking Pal search
for open parking spots. Sure
enough, there’s one in the
back of the lot, hidden
behind the other parked
cars. Jackie parks, thanks
Spectre, and arrives just in
time to see Johnny running
across the field in his cleats.
