FALL 08 Jackie Berry COURSE SYLLABUS—CULTURE OF FRENCH (3 hrs.) Numerous handouts, videos, and documentaries will be used. COURSE OBJECTIVES: To increase the students’ appreciation of French culture in the following fields: (1) Geography (2) History (3) The Arts (4) Sporting Events (5) Important People (6) Culinary—Food and Drink (7) Life Experiences (8) France with emphasis on Paris COURSE CONTENT: Students will be given handouts on each of the above topics and will use a hands-on approach in collecting information. This information will then be discussed and tested. To make the culture “come alive,” appropriate videos and documentaries will be viewed. This course will be taught in English. ATTENDANCE: 1. Class attendance is not only mandatory, but necessary for the learning of a foreign language. Each absence over two will lower your final grade 3%. Five absences will lower the final semester grade one letter. Six absences will result in the final semester grade being lowered two letters; seven, three letters. Students arriving after attendance has been taken will be counted as tardy. Excessive tardiness WILL be counted as absences. 2. If an exam is missed, it must be made up in the Learning Center BEFORE THE NEXT CLASS!!! Failure to do so will result in a zero for that exam. (For extenuating circumstances, please talk with the instructor.) FALL 08 Jackie Berry COURSE GRADE: Grades are determined as a percentage based on the student’s accumulated point total of all tests. If a student misses class one time during any one of the eight units of study (listed above) without notifying the teacher, the student will take a short essay test on that particular unit. The following grading scale will be implemented: 90 – 100% = A 80 – 89% = B 70 – 79% = C 60 – 69% = D Below 60% = F ACADEMIC DISHONESTY: Cheating/plagiarism will be scored as 0 and averaged into the final grade. The Dean will be notified as well. CELL PHONES are NOT ALLOWED in the classrooms, nor in the computer lab. Because cell phones can be very disruptive to the class, a student using a cell phone (in any manner) during class will be counted absent. **Any student who feels s/he may need an accommodation based on the impact of a disability under the American’s with Disabilities Act should contact me privately to discuss specific needs.
