Manuel Jimenez & Sons Blue Jaguar, wood, paint - 14" H x 20" L • Manuel Jimenez was the most respected woodcarver in Oaxaca. • He is regarded as the founder of the art form. • All the styles in carving in Oaxaca that are seen today can be traced back to him. • Manuel’s artistic genius and innovations transformed woodcarving into an art form. Manuel Jimenez • Manuel grew up in one of the poorest villages in Mexico, near Mount Alban (Oaxaca Valley). He herded goats as a child and started carving wood from the copal tree that he found in the hills while he watched the animals. He started selling his carvings at local markets. He suffered many years for his art, but never lost his artistic vision. • One of Manuel’s signature works is the Nahual (pronounced NA-wal). This is an animal with a human face. It reflects the idea that humans transform into animal spirits at night. The physical world and the realms of the spirit merge in each unique carving. • Eventually, Manuel was discovered and his career as an artist took off. He was responsible for the carving “boom” that many local artists emulated and changed Oaxaca forever. This new art form brought newfound prosperity to many of the poor villages. • This picture depicts “Market Day” in Oaxaca Valley, Mexico. • Manuel worked with his two sons, Angelico & Isaias who learned from their father’s side. They now carve in cedar, whereas most other artists use copal wood local to Oaxaca Valley. Manuel was the oldest and most successful woodcarver in Oaxaca. His works are displayed in many museums and private collections around the world. • Manuel passed away in 2005. Primary Colors Secondary Colors Tertiary Colors From the primary colors you can create all other colors. Mix two primary colors to create a secondary color. Tertiary colors or Intermediate colors are created by combining a primary with a secondary. Example: Red-Violet Analogous Colors • These are colors that are closely related because they lie next to each other on the color wheel. There must be 3 colors (sometimes 4) in this color scheme. • What are the analogous colors in the example on the bottom? Complementary Color Scheme • These colors are directly across from each other on the color wheel. They have equal number of colors between them. There are just two colors in a complementary color scheme. • Complementary colors tend to give the most striking contrast. • • What colors are complementary in the example on the left? • Mixing two complementary colors will neutralize the color and also can make a black. Shades and Tints • A tint is a lighter value of a color • Start with white and add in the color. • A shade is a darker value of a color • Start with a color then add in black. •Always start with the lighter color.
