Welcome!!!
In my classroom students will learn skills they will carry with them for the rest of their lives. Regardless of the
career they choose, every student needs business, communication, and computer skills. If they only ever take
one marketing class, at least they will have learned to market themselves better, and everyone can use that. My
classroom offers enough structure to provide security and enough freedom to develop an interest in business,
learn responsibly and feel comfortable. We will have 35 or more students in each class so it is imperative that
my guidelines for creating an optimal learning environment are followed.
Course Description
This introductory course will expose students to many facets of business and marketing including workplace
employability standards and professional sales and marketing standards. Part of course work will include the
instruction of word processing, spreadsheet, desktop publications and presentation software to create marketing
related projects. Course curriculum is aligned nationally with DECA’s comprehensive learning program and
students are strongly encouraged to participate in DECA, which prepares the next generation to be academically
prepared, community oriented and professionally responsible experienced leaders. DECA is integrated into
classroom instruction and provides a great opportunity for students to apply learning, connect to business and
compete.

School Website—
Many announcements and other important data will be available through the school website listed under Williams
Field High School > Teachers > Clifford
Deadlines —
Since the purpose of this class is to teach students how to be successful in the real world, deadlines factor heavily into
their grades. In the real world, time is money, and a late publication can cost a company thousands of dollars. Any unit
project/assessment turned in late will only receive up to a 70% (regardless of the reason).
Computer Use —
Computers are to be used for school purposes only. Students that choose to use class time to check email,
download music, blog, play games, do random Google searches, etc. will be removed from the computer or have
those aspects of the computer locked down. A second infraction will cause the loss of computer privileges for a
week, and result in a communication to parents, a third infraction will lead to a conversation with counselors
and/or administration about possible removal from the class. Access to a computer is a privilege.
Grading —
Grades are cumulative by semester. Progress reports demonstrate a “snap shot” of student grades at that
particular moment; whereas, the Semester Report Card is the permanent grade for that semester’s class.
Work in this course will fall into two categories: practice (bellwork, notes, daily assignments, or homework) and
assessments (quizzes, tests, projects, portfolios, or presentations). Other tasks may be added at a later date, but
will always be categorized as practice or assessment.

Policies —
 For each day you are absent, you have a day of make-up.
o NOTE: If you are absent on the day a long-term project is due, it is still due that day (either
send it with a friend, drop it off at the office, or email it). If absent on the day of a test, you must
bring a signed letter from a parent stating that you were sick and are willing to take a different
make-up test after school the day you return.

Make-Up Work: It is the student’s responsibility to get instructions for any work missed while absent
(including bellwork).

ASD: Williams Field is now utilizing an After School Detention (ASD) system. If a student
consistently disrupts the classroom learning environment by coming late or being unprepared for class, a
call will be made home, and the student will attend ASD the following day after school.

Plagiarism: The use and/or duplication of any other person’s work without giving them credit through
quotation marks or citations, to include whole papers, paragraphs, single sentences, or even design ideas
and creations is considered plagiarism. Acknowledge copied or quoted material properly. Students will
receive a ZERO on any assignment that includes plagiarized material.
Profanity will not be tolerated.
Students will be notified by the instructor of any changes in course requirements or policies.


Classroom Consequences —
Behavior that disrupts the learning environment will result in the following consequences:
1. Warning from the teacher
2. Removal from team, class, environment
3. Contact parents; create behavior contract
4. Referral to the principal; contact parents
NOTE: At any time, the teacher may decide that the behavior being displayed by a student requires skipping
steps 1 or 2 and going straight to 3 or 4.
Marketing
Student Commitment to Learning:
I have read and understood the policies and procedures for Mr. Clifford’s Marketing class. I am willing to
participate in class to help make this experience a successful one. I understand that though the practice
assignments are not worth a lot of points, if I don’t do them, I won’t pass the assessment tests or projects. I
also plan to check Synergy on a weekly basis so that I am always aware of my grade and my progress in the
class.

Parent Commitment to Support Student’s Learning:
I have read and understood the policies and procedures for Mr. Clifford’s Marketing class. I understand that if
my child is absent, work must be made up at school when he/she returns, during Black Hawk Period. I
understand that this class is primarily a project-based class that is graded on effort, time spent learning, and
demonstration of skills (so students that are unwilling to do the work will probably fail), and to contact Mr.
Clifford directly via email or phone if there is a concern. I also understand that my child will need occasional
access to the Internet, a quiet environment in which to concentrate, and the knowledge that I will be checking
on their progress on a weekly basis to ensure they are being successful.
I intend to contact the Williams Field front office staff to get a Parent Synergy Logon code so that I can
independently check my child’s grades. I intend to set Synergy to automatically send me an email whenever
my child’s grade falls below our expectations. At that point, I will discuss with them what needs to happen to
pull that grade back up.
