SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
LV19:1-2, 17-18 1 COR 3:16-23 MT 5:38-48 (79)
ACADEMY OF ST. JOSEPH
2014 SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR
THURSDAY, MARCH 6-SUNDAY, MARCH 9
Dear Academy Community and Friends,
“The Lord said to Moses, ‘Speak to the whole Israelite
community and tell them: Be holy, for I, your Lord, your
God, am holy. You shall not bear hatred for your brother or
sister in your heart. Though you may have to reprove your
fellow citizen, do not incur sin because of him. Take no
revenge and cherish no grudge against any of your people.
You shall love your neighbor as yourself. I am the Lord.’
‘But I say to you…’”
We still are on the mountain with Matthew’s teaching of
Jesus. We have passed from the beauty of the beatitudes
with promised reward, to the reminder that we are salt and
light for others. Today we are challenged about what we find
in our hearts.
The lawgiver of the old law, Moses, was instructed to teach
that there is no place for hatred, revenge or grudges. Jesus
the lawgiver of the new dispensation tells us we are to love
those who try, taunt and tempt us, which He even called our
enemies. We find many excuses and reasons to justify our
actions. We find road rage gratifying, if we are getting even.
We can’t accept ‘forgive and forget’. A better route is to
‘forgive and remember without bitterness.’ We find ‘I don’t
get mad, I just get even’ a mantra for our attitudes and
actions. We judge easily, without justice and mercy.
A suggestion is, at this moment, consider the person or event
which challenges me, and give the person and the problem to
the Lord. Why carry it? Does it seem to make me feel better?
What a wonderful way to life out burden and live the Great
Commandment ‘love of God and love of neighbor’. Perhaps
only in this way can I consider myself holy.

experience a celebration of reading that provides families the
opportunity to get involved in a universal mission:
encouraging kids to read every day. Reading is one of the
most important skills you can teach a child! Our Book Fair
provides access to a selection of fun, engaging, and
affordable books that children enjoy, together with the
opportunity for children to choose their own books, to
encourage reading. As with most acquired skills, the more
children practice reading the better they will become.
Reading is vital to every child’s success, and something that
should be encouraged while they are young. Now is the
time!
There are two ways to participate in our Book Fair: Online:

PAX CHRISTI METRO NEW YORK
“Do you not know that you are the temple of God, and that
the Spirit of God dwells in you?”
This question from St Paul is a question for all of us, all of
us! It is said to you and me, to our relatives, neighbors, coworkers and classmates, to our friends and, yes, even to our
enemies. No wonder God says in the book of Leviticus,
“You shall love your neighbor as yourself” and Jesus takes it
even farther and tells us to love our enemies and pray for
those who persecute us. How hard is this? It is as hard as
loving those who cheat us, rob us, fly planes into our
buildings to kill us. It is as hard as being tortured and hanged
on a cross for a crime you didn’t commit. It is VERY hard,
but it is what it is to be a Christian. God help us never to stop
trying no matter how many times we fail.
