• New York: New York authorities say a helicopter
carrying four Swedish tourists has landed in the
Hudson River off Manhattan, but everyone has
been rescued.
The incident happened shortly before noon
Sunday in the section of the river near 79th
Street. The pilot and four passengers were taken
to shore.
2. Suresh Kalmadi to contest in Asian Athletics
Association elections
Pune: Undeterred by corruption charges and
the subsequent court cases for his alleged
involvement in the 2010 Commonwealth Games

Met department ignored?
• Dehradun: Could pilgrims and tourists have been
evacuated in time to avoid the monsoon fury in

claims that warnings of very heavy rain, unusual

ahead of deluge. Warnings, that were

• Salvador, Brazil: Gianluigi Buffon saved three
penalties as an under-strength Italy edged

following a 2-2 draw after extra time.
6. Bear attacks two forest guards who rescued
it from a well
• Chennai: Two forest guards in Tamil Nadu's
Krishnagiri district were attacked by a bear
who they rescued from a well on Sunday.
The bear had strayed into the Bargur village
from a nearby jungle. It had attacked a farmer
and then fell into a well while on the run.
• 7. Policeman killed, two security personnel injured in
encounter in Jammu and Kashmir
• Srinagar: A policeman was killed and two other security
personnel were injured in an encounter with militants in
Pulwama district of south Kashmir today. The encounter
comes amid a bandh call by separatists in the Valley in
protest against the death of two young men in Army firing
on Sunday.
The encounter took place at Tral during a counterinsurgency operation launched by the security forces
following information about the presence of militants in the
area, a police spokesman said.
A policemen from the state police and a CRPF jawan
sustained injuries in the exchange of fire with the militants,
the spokesman said.
• 8. Rupee weakens to 59.47 after 2-day rally
• The rupee opened weaker on Monday after
gaining in each of the previous two sessions,
with domestic stocks expected to give further
direction to the currency.
The rupee was trading at 59.46/47 to the
dollar as against 59.385/395 Friday close. It hit
a record low of 60.76 last week.
• 9. 19 fire-fighters die battling US fire: official
• Yarnell, Arizona: Hot winds blew a U.S.
wildfire out of control, killing 19 elite
firefighters in the country's deadliest wildfire
involving firefighters for at least 30 years.
• 10. Nokia to fully acquire Siemens' stake in
Nokia Siemens Networks
• Nokia will pay $2.2 billion to buy out partner
Siemens AG in their network equipment joint
venture, a deal that is likely to bring some stability
to the company after it stumbled in smart phones.
• Loss-making Nokia also gained full control of the
profitable venture, Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN),
at a cheaper than-expected price, analysts said.
11. Rupee gains to 59.20 on Unilever open offer
related inflow: report
• The rupee gained on talk of inflows related to
Unilever's open offer for the Indian unit, dealers
said.
The pair traded at 59.24/25 versus 59.52 intraday
low and 59.385/395 close on Friday.
Unilever's $5.4 billion open offer for Hindustan
Unilever commenced on June 21.
Dealers said some declines in the pair may also be
position unwinding ahead of Unilever flows.
12. Apple signs chip-manufacturing deal with
TSMC: Report
• Apple has struck a deal with the world's
biggest contract microchip maker in what
analysts see as an attempt to reduce its reliance
on arch-rival Samsung, a report said.
• The US tech giant forged the agreement with
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co
(TSMC) earlier this month, according to the
Wall Street Journal, which cited unidentified
TSMC executives
13. Deutsche Bank cuts Idea Cellular to 'hold'
• Deustche Bank downgraded Idea Cellular to
"hold" from "buy", citing regulatory risks and
valuations after the stock outperformed the
BSE Sensex over the past six months.
The bank says Idea's recent outperformance
already discounts hopes about execution,
margin expansion and positive cash flows that
were the main premise for its previous "buy"
rating.
14. Samsung plans to invest Rs. 500 crore to ramp up
mobile production
• South Korean electronics major Samsung is planning to
invest over Rs. 500 crore to ramp up its mobile
production capacity in India, industry sources said.
• "Samsung is working to invest Rs. 500 crore in its
mobile production facility in India. It had approached
government in this regard to take benefit of policy
announcements and other incentives. The investment
proposals have been cleared at Department of Electronics
and IT (DEITY) level," a source told PTI.
15. Vodafone offers Rs. 4,000 cr to renew Delhi,
Mumbai, Kolkata licences
• New Delhi: Vodafone Group Plc's Indian unit,
which is in a dispute with the government
over the renewal of its licences in three key
cities, is offering to pay Rs. 4,000 crore for the
extension of the permits, the company said in
a letter dated June 18 to the telecom ministry
and seen by Reuters.

Train Hits Crowd in India, Killing
Dozens
• Dozens of Hindu pilgrims are killed while crossing the tracks near a
remote station in eastern India when an express train crashes into
them. After the crash, the crowd drags out the train's driver and
beats him. The crowd also sets the train on fire. The Bihar train
station is not accessible by road and express trains usually come
through without stopping at a speed of 50 miles per hour. Officials
say the driver of the train had clearance to pass through the station.
Thirty-seven people are confirmed dead, including several children.

Post
• Jeff Bezos, founder and CEO of Amazon.com, buys The Washington Post
for $250 million. Bezos is currently ranked 19th on Forbes' billionaire list.
He has an estimated fortune of more than $25 billion. Despite his
extensive wealth and success, Bezos' purchase comes as a surprise
because he has not previously mentioned an interest in the newspaper
business.

• Russia grants Edward Snowden, the American who leaked info
about U.S. surveillance, asylum for one year. The temporary asylum
allows him to leave the Moscow airport where he has been since
June. Russia grants Snowden asylum despite strong urging from the
U.S. not to do so. In response, President Obama cancels a planned
summit meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin which was to
be held in Moscow in September.
Egypt Declares State of Emergency
• In Cairo, riot police raid protest camps. They open fire and use armored
bulldozers, tear gas, snipers, and helicopters to clear the camps. Protesters
throw rocks and burn tires in response. More than 500 people are killed,
and the government declares a state of emergency. Mohamed ElBaradei
resigns as vice president in protest of the military's action.
Israel and Palestine Begin Talks on
Their Own Turf
• Israelis and Palestinians officially begin peace talks in Jerusalem.
Expectations are low going into the talks, the third attempt to negotiate
since 2000, and nearly five years since the last attempt. The talks begin
just hours after Israel releases 26 Palestinian prisoners. The prisoner
release is a step on Israel's part to bring Palestine back to the negotiating
table. Israel says the prisoner release will be the first of four.
Manning Sentenced to 35 Years for
Leaking U.S. Files
• Private Bradley Manning, age 25, is sentenced to 35 years in prison for
leaking over 700,000 U.S. government files to WikiLeaks, files that
contained classified U.S. military activities. It is the longest sentence ever
given in the U.S. involving leaked government data to the public.

• After days of stoic silence, self-styled godman Asaram Bapu,
accused of raping a 16-year-old girl, finally defended himself .
• Asaram Bapu on Thursday said, "Saanch ko aanch nahi aur jhooth

ashram at the time of the crime.
• After the reports of a rape charge against Asaram Bapu cropped up,
many are debating whether he should still be called a 'Sant' or
