Identity theft is when someone steal your personal
information to use for fraudulent and criminal
activities
They may use your personal information to
◦ Take out loans in your name
◦ Turn utilities on and not pay them
◦ Counterfeit checks
◦ Get new divers licenses with their picture
◦ They may give your name to the police during a arrest

They get information from businesses

They steal your mail

They may rummage though your trash

Deter identity theft by following these simple
guidelines

Shred important document before throwing them out

Protect your identity by not carrying your social
security card with you

Don’t give out personal information to people you do
not know over the phone, mail or internet

Keep your personal information in a safe secure place
Be alert for possible fraud by monitoring your
accounts for

Mail that does not arrive

Unexpected credit card or account statements

Denial of credit for no reason

Calls or letters about purchase you made
Defend yourself from identity theft when you
suspect a problem

Placing a fraud alert on your credit reports

Close accounts that have been tampered with

File reports with the police department and your
financial institutions

File complaints with the Federal Trade Commission
and your state Attorney General Office
