Syllabus for World Dance 2014-2015 Ms. Ross /Dance Department Welcome to Ms. P. Ross’s World Dance class for 2014-2015, together we will have an exciting and successful journey as we dance around the world. Class Description: The purpose of this course is to explore and develop techniques in world dance and to enhance creativity. This will include: knowledge and application of world dance techniques from a variety of cultures; understand similarities in dance techniques and steps across different cultural dance forms; understand the physical fitness value derived from participation in dance; exhibit an enhanced appreciation for the role of dance in a culture. Class Procedures: Dress-Out properly. Enter dance room. Neatly place all backpacks and personal items in designated area of dance studio. Form roll call lines and begin warm-up exercises and wait silently for instruction. Folders must contain all required assignments and will be checked regularly. Skills test will take place regularly, so make sure to have folders with you at all times. All students leaving the room with a green pass will sign out before exiting class. Class Rules: Respect Yourself and Respect Others Use restroom before or after class. Always dress out and be equipped to perform written and physical assignments daily. Bring water bottle with you to school and class. Student Responsibilities and Expectations: I expect all students to practice self-discipline and arrive to class with a positive attitude and an open-mind. It is the student’s responsibility to follow up with the teacher to receive assignments in the case of an absence. All rules found in the Student Code of Conduct will be upheld and supported in this course so make sure to be familiar with these. World Dance Class Uniform: Black MSA T-shirt Black MSA Sweat pants or Black MSA Basketball shorts Hair pulled back out of face No shoes or socks will be worn in this class- please make sure practice good foot hygiene and care No MSA Hoodies are to be worn after warm up! Supplies Needed For Class: Dance Uniform- must replace tights when they become damaged Hair ties, bobby pins, make up for performances 3 Prong folder with 2 pockets. Loose-leaf paper. Pen or pencil. (Blue or black ink only) Grading: Participation Dressing Out Physically Participating Work Ethic (attitude and effort) Written Assignments/Folder Skills Tests Written Assignments/Folder Skills Tests Projects/Presentations **Showcase Performances Quizzes Final Test Please note: a doctor’s note must be provided to the teacher if an illness or injury will interfere with class participation. However, if an excessive amount of class time is missed due to an illness or an injury, even with documentation from a doctor, the highest possible grade to earn for the assignments or choreography missed will be “C”. ** Dancers are REQUIRED to attend mandatory showcases as part of their grade and overall learning experience. Dates for these performances will be sent home ASAP.
