Name: Katelyn Heupel WKU ID#: 800553987______ Date: 11/24/14 Lesson Grade Level: Subject: Language Arts 3rd grade Authentic Topic: _____School Playground____ Lesson Title: Make Our School Playground Better Objectives/Standards: Objective Content Objective: Students will design a new playground incorporating solutions they came up with to improve their playground. Technology Objective: Students will create a multimedia project (Prezi, Animoto video, etc.) to present to their principal showing the problems they found with their school playground and a possible solution to those problems. Standards W.3.1 – Write opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with reasons. W.3.8- Recall information from experiences or gather information from print and digital sources, take brief notes on sources and sort evidence into provided categories. W.3.6 – With guidance and support from adults, use technology to produce and publish writing (using keyboarding skills) as well as to interact and collaborate with others. Connections: How does your lesson address the following? A. Revised Bloom’s Level Level 6 – Evaluate: 6.2 Planning – Students will design a new playground for their school incorporating the solutions to the problems they identified. B. Cognitive Complexity C Level:3 Justification: Teacher directs student interaction with content at a create level of planning. The teacher has directed the topic of school playground problems, and students will be researching and then creating with that topic. R Level: 4 Justification: Learning emphasizes and impacts the classroom, school, or community. Learning is integrated across subject areas. The design and solutions to the problems the students have found could affect their school in a positive way. The groups will be presenting to their principal in hopes that a solution could actually be implemented at their school. E Level: 3 Justification: Students partnered with the teacher to come up with the content of the school playground problems. Students choose the specific problem with the playground and they choose what their solutions will be. Students take an inquiry based approach to finding solutions to the problems and students collaborate with other students in groups. T Level: 4 Justification: Student technology use is embedded in the content and is essential from project completion, promotes student collaboration among students, and helps students solve authentic problems at the create level. Students must use technology to complete the multimedia presentation with their group and is also used in their design of a new playground. The teacher will work closely with the school media specialist and the school computer lab instructor to co-plan, co-teach, and co-assess the students. The three of us will be working closely to help the students with this project. More specifically the library media specialist will aid in student research of their solution and the computer lab instruction will help aid in creating of multimedia presentation. C. Real World learning D. Engaged learning E. Technology integration F. How will you collaborate with other professionals in this lesson? Revised May 2013 Instructional1Design Project Resources: www.Animoto.com This is a good program for students to use to create a video for their presentation. Students have had some experience with this with the librarian. https://animoto.com/blog/category/education/ Students can use this website to get tips for using and making animoto videos. They can also see examples of videos that others have made to help them in creating their own. Prezi Students could use this program to create their multimedia presentation. Students have also had some experience with prezi with the librarian and with the computer lab instructor. https://prezi.com/gx2bm0n9u01f/8-tips-for-an-awesome-prezi/ Students can use this website if they choose to make a prezi, to get some tips on making a good prezi. Digital Camera Each group will be using the school digital camera to collect evidence of problems with the school playground. Revised May 2014 Instructional2Design Project Make Our School Playground Better Scenario: Third grade students have been learning about writing to persuade an audience. They have been asked to think about problems with their school and ways their school could be improved. The class decided the problem they wanted to address was the school playground and its problems with litter, vandalism, and overall efficiency. The class will be divided into 5 groups. Each group will collect evidence of these problems with a digital camera and research possible solutions for the problem they choose to target and will design a new playground for their school incorporating the solutions to the problems they identified. Then each group will create a multimedia project (Prezi, Animoto video, etc.) to present to the principal showing the problems they found with their school playground and possible solutions to those problems. Their design will also be included in their presentation. Lesson Tasks (directions): 1. First you and your group members will go onto the playground and investigate to find the problem with the playground that you group wants to target. 2. Then you will obtain the digital camera from the teacher to take pictures of the problem you have decided to focus on. 3. Next you will brainstorm with your group possible solutions to that problem. Then you will research the solution that you came up with. One form a research will be that you interview a teacher in your school and get their point of view on the problem you are addressing. 4. Then you will need to create a design of a new playground implementing your solution to include in your presentation. 5. You will know you are done with you research when you are able to put the following things into your presentation. The problem with the school playground including evidence Your solution to the problem Point of view from teacher at the school How you can implement the solution Cost for implementing the solution A design of a new playground incorporating you solution to the problem. 6. Then your group may begin on your presentation. You have the choice of what program you would like to use to create you presentation. I would suggest two programs you have practiced with in library and the computer lab. Those are Animoto and Prezi, but your group has the choice to choose another project to create your multimedia presentation with. 7. Once you have completed your presentation save and email the link to your teacher. Your teacher will then work to embed the videos or presentations on the classroom blog. She will also set up for the principal to come to the classroom so each group can present their project to him and convince him that your solution needs to be implemented.
