The Oaks Primary School Moving Forward • A new multi use games area was built with Astroturf giving an all year round sports experience for children as well as added income for the school with lettings. • An adventure playground was installed • New playground markings provided activities for children at playtimes but also provided opportunities for children to learn outside in lesson time eg number lines and number squares • Fences were removed and areas opened for complete access for all children. • Canopies provided shade and weather protection for children to learn outside in KS1. Outside Environment Starting point When the new Head started in 2008 it was clear that improvements were needed in the outside area. Many areas were fenced off, the playground was barren, children were bored and behaviour on the playground was not good. IMPACT The future • An “outside classroom” has been installed enabling more learning outside. • The SDP reflected the need to improve outside areas and a significant amount of the Capital Projects budget was devoted to improving outcomes for children. Raised vegetable beds have been developed for children to manage. • Chickens are planned! • The KS1 outside area is being developed so all the children can have break together meaning less interference with learning. Children have more areas to play in and more space so behaviour on the playground has improved. Involving the children Pupil voice is very important at The Oaks and children were involved at every stage. Pupil perception interviews told us that a Quiet Area was needed so we developed an area with benches, games and shade. The School Council want more benches on the field, a future plan!
