European Home Run: a souvenir for Vienna
Millions of people visit the Austrian capital each year, and many of them want to take a slice
of Vienna home with them. They are looking for a keepsake that perfectly sums up what it is
that makes the city so unique: its unique blend of imperial charm and a dynamic, young
creative scene. But what form should a quintessentially Viennese souvenir take? The Vienna
Tourist Board touched off a creative process to find answers to this question – an invitation
only design competition. A group of designers from across the continent were asked to
participate in the project, entitled “European Home Run”, and help shape international
perceptions of Austria’s capital city. The aim of the competition is to come up with a new take
on the humble souvenir, and present the contemporary face of Vienna as a creative city
brimming with potential and teeming with outstanding achievements across the entire design
spectrum. In total, six product designers from six different European nations have been
commissioned to capture their view of Vienna in a three-dimensional design: Germany’s Ding
3000 (www.ding3000.com), Switzerland’s Big Game (www.big-game.ch), France’s Ionna
Vautrin (www.ionnavautrin.com), Italy’s formafantasma (www.formafantasma.com), Spain’s
Hector Serrano (www.hectorserrano.com) and the United Kingdom’s PearsonLloyd
(www.pearsonlloyd.com). The Vienna Tourist Board will announce the outcome of the
competition in Vienna on October 24, 2012. The identity of the winning project will be
decided by a high-caliber international jury (comprising big names such as International
Herald Tribune design critic Alice Rawsthorn and Galit Gaon, Chief Curator of the Design
Museum Holon), as well as the results of a public ballot. The designs for the new Vienna
souvenir will be on show at the MAK Design Shop as part of Vienna Design Week (Sep 28Oct 7, 2012). Vienna Design Week (www.viennadesignweek.at) and the MAK Design Shop
(MAK - Austrian Museum of Applied Arts/Contemporary Art, www.mak.at) are official
European Home Run partners. Austrian Airlines is the official carrier of the design
competition.

The latest on Vienna’s restaurant scene
The restaurant at the luxury Ritz Carlton Vienna, which opened on the Ringstrasse at the end
of August 2012, is just one of the latest additions to the capital’s burgeoning food scene.
Under head chef Wini Brugger, the creative genius behind top eatery Indochine 21 in the
historic first district, Dstrikt offers a full range of authentic and unpretentious Austrian cuisine.
1
Besides the Dstrikt restaurant, the Ritz-Carlton Vienna also has a hotel bar, a lounge in the
lobby and a rooftop bar, which is open to visitors during the summer months. Luxury eatery
Fabios, situated in a prime first district location opposite the new and exclusive Golden
Quarter shopping district, was refitted this summer to plans drawn up by renowned Viennese
architects BEHF. The culinary focus under chef de cuisine Joachim Gradwohl – who came to
Fabios from Meinl am Graben – is on high-quality regional produce. Freyung 4 in the noble
Palais Kinsky is another new arrival in the first district. A crossover between a restaurant, bar
and private terrace, it offers a contemporary take on Viennese cuisine. Since summer 2012,
Harald Riedl has been providing the inspiration at Dom Beisl near St. Stephen's Cathedral
where a range of French, Viennese and Mediterranean specialties await. The excellent wine
list features more than 600 varieties. Hoher Markt in the heart of Vienna’s historic city center
is now home to ra’mien go – a new takeaway restaurant offering upscale Asian dishes.
Meanwhile, a pair of chic options have opened for business within easy walking distance of
the luxury Sofitel Vienna Stephansdom hotel in the second district. Ansari, an offshoot of
Madiani on Karmelitermarkt, offers Georgian specialties with a taste of the orient. The
attractive interior was created by Viennese architect Gregor Eichinger. Next door, Mochi
offers superb Japanese specialties including Nigiri sushi and tempura. This popular minirestaurant was designed by renowned architects Kohlmayr Lutter Knapp.

Viennese hotels: new openings and upcoming projects
Vienna’s hotels currently have a combined total of around 55,800 beds (as at March 19,
2012). This total is set to rise to 58,200 by the end of 2012, and again to 62,400 by the end
of 2013. New arrivals in the capital include the first Austrian branch of America’s Ritz-Carlton
hotel chain which opened its doors to the public in August 2012. A grand total of four
mansion houses on Vienna’s Ringstrasse boulevard were completely remodeled to
accommodate the new hotel’s 202 rooms and suites. In late October 2012 Hotel Lamée will
welcome its first guests in a renovated 1930s building in the first district. This intimate fourstar-plus design hotel offers just 22 rooms and ten suites. The rooms on the seventh floor
have their own private terraces, and the rooftop garden has stunning views of St. Stephen's
2
Cathedral. On the ground floor, Bloom, a combination of café, bar and bistro, is open to hotel
guests and the general public alike. The end of 2012 is scheduled to bring the grand opening
of Hotel Sans Souci Wien, a luxury five-star hotel with 122 beds right next to the
MuseumsQuartier in the seventh district. Early March will witness the opening of a new
extension at the 25hours Hotel Wien. Also in the seventh district, this new development will
take the fashionable three-star hotel’s total capacity to more than 372 beds. The new fivestar Palais Hansen Kempinski Vienna is set to open at around the same time. Located in an
opulent former mansion house on the Ringstrasse boulevard, this new hotel will offer 304
beds, two restaurants and a private spa zone. A new boutique hotel named The Guesthouse
is due to open its doors in a prime location close to the opera in summer 2013. The interior of
this 78-bed, five-star-equivalent hotel bears the design signature of none other than Sir
Terence Conran. 2014 will feature the opening of the 143-room Hotel Park Hyatt in a
complex of historic buildings in the old town which will also be home to the Golden Quarter,
Vienna’s new luxury shopping zone (www.goldenesquartier.at). The low budget Motel One
design hotel chain is planning to open yet another branch in the capital in 2014. Located in a
heritage-listed building close to the state opera, Vienna’s third Motel One will have 400
rooms. Motel One Wien-Prater is set to open close to Vienna’s Messe exhibition center in fall
2012, about a year after Motel One Wien-Westbahnhof. A Four Seasons hotel with 320 beds
in the first district, and the Hotel Im Palais Schwarzenberg in the third district with 128 beds
are still in the planning stages (scheduled opening date: 2015).

Luxury shopping in the heart of Vienna
The luxurious shopping streets in the heart of the city just keep on growing. Most of the
international labels and flagship stores in the first district are concentrated around what is
known locally as the Golden U, made up of Kärntner Strasse, Graben and Kohlmarkt .
Chanel, Gucci, Burberry, Armani, Akris, Hermès and Swarovski are just some of the
exclusive brands to have opened stores here in recent years. This shopper’s paradise will be
joined by the Golden Quarter at the end of 2012. A complex of historic, heritage-listed
3
buildings linking Tuchlauben, Bognergasse and Am Hof is currently undergoing
refurbishments ahead of its rebirth as an upscale shopping center. Emporio Armani, Miu Miu
and Europe’s second largest Louis Vuitton flagship store will all open at the Golden Quarter
in time for Christmas 2012. By the time the development is officially handed over in the first
quarter of 2014 it will already be home to a full range of leading international brands including
Brioni, Church, 7 For All Mankind and Prada. The shops will share the space with offices and
apartments, as well as a luxury hotel with 143 beds (Park Hyatt, planned opening 2014).

New look for Vienna’s stations
The first phase of development at Vienna’s new Hauptbahnhof, or main station, is scheduled
for completion in early December. To begin with this international rail hub will only serve local
routes, but once work is completed at the site towards the end of 2014, uninterrupted transEuropean rail services along the main east-west and north-south routes will become a reality.
The new main station will bring shorter journey times for travelers, a more enjoyable travel
experience thanks to easier changes, improved connecting services and barrier-free access
in line with the latest standards. Solar arrays on the canopies above the platforms will
provide the electricity for the station’s lighting, and geothermal technology will also feature in
the development’s eco-friendly energy mix. Located on the site of the old Südbahnhof, the
new main station will sit at the heart of a brand new 109 hectare neighborhood. The ultramodern station will be flanked by 5,000 apartments and new office buildings with 20,000
workspaces. Another major construction project involving one of the city’s major transport
hubs is also nearing completion. The revamped Wien Mitte station now sits beneath a stateof-the-art, multi-functional building complex. This 130,000 square meter facility comprising
offices, shops, restaurants and an entertainment zone is just a stone’s throw from the first
district. Feted artist Louise Bourgeois created a seven-meter aluminum sculpture for the new
station. After the official opening of the site and a number of shops in November 2012, a
three-storey shopping mall with a further 60 stores will follow in March 2013. With two
subway lines, several S-Bahn commuter lines and a number of regional rail services, Wien
Mitte is one of the city’s major transport hubs. It is also the terminus for the City Airport Train
(CAT) which shuttles between the city center and Vienna International Airport.
