UNIT OBJECTIVES:
Upon completion of this unit, the student will be able to:
1. List the parts of the bony thorax.
2. List specific topographic positioning landmarks of the chest.
3. Identify the parts and function of specific structures of the respiratory system.
4. List the four organs of the mediastinum.
5. Identify specific structures of the chest on posteroanterior (PA) and lateral
radiograph.
6. Identify the four types of body habitus and their impact on chest positioning.
7. Describe the methods to ensure proper degree on inspiration during chest
radiography.
8. Identify alterations in positioning routine and exposure factors specific to pediatric
and geriatric patients
9. Match various types of pathologic chest conditions to their correct definition.
10.List three reasons for taking chest radiographs with the patient in the erect
position whenever possible.
11.For specific forms of pathologic chest conditions, indicate whether manual
exposure factors need to be increased, decreased, or remain the same.
12. List the correct Central Ray placement, part position, and criteria for specific
chest radiographs.
13.Using a peer, position the patient for posteroanterior (PA), anteroposterior (AP,
and lateral chest projections.
14. Determine whether rotation is present of PA and lateral chest radiographs.

exposure factors, motion, collimation, positioning, or other errors
