(Criterion D: communication) 1. 5000 BC - The Sumerians form the first towns and cities. 2. 2500 BC- Minoan civilization flourishes. 3. 2330 BC - Sargon I conquers Sumerian cities to creates the world's first empire, the Akkadian Empire. 4. 1900 BC - The Assyrians rise to power in northern Mesopotamia. 5. 1792BC - The Babylonian king Hammurabi makes a code of laws for all to see in the kingdom. 6. 1600 to 1120 BC Mycenaean civilization flourishes. 7. 1225 BC - The Assyrians capture Babylon. 8. 1200 BC – the Trojan War. 9. 1050 to 750 - Greek Dark Ages. 10. 800 to 700 - Rise of the Greek city states. 11. 753 BC - The city of Rome is founded and ruled by kings. 12. 750 to 700 - Homer writes Iliad and Odyssey. 25. 333 BC - Alexander the Great conquers the Persian Empire. 13. 621 BC - Draco writes a code of laws. 26. 218 BC - Second Punic war when Hannibal and his Carthage army invade Italy by crossing the Alps. 14. 550 BC - Cyrus the Great rises to power and the Persian Empire begins. 27. 146 BC - Rome conquers Greece which becomes part of the Roman Republic. 15. 522 BC - Darius I becomes King of Persia, expands the empire and divides it into states each ruled by a satrap. 28. 45 BC - Julius Caesar becomes the first dictator of Rome. Caesar crosses the Rubicon River and defeats Pompey in a civil war to become the supreme ruler of Rome. This signals the end of the Roman Republic. 16. 509 BC - The last king of Rome is overthrown and Rome becomes a republic ruled by senators. 17. 508BC - democracy begins in Athens. Cleisthenes introduces the reforms. 18. 500BC - the start of the 'Classical Period' in Greece. 19. 490 BC - Darius I attacks the Greeks. He is defeated at the Battle of Marathon. 20. 480 BC - Xerxes I attacks the Greeks with a huge army. He is defeated after the Battle of Salamis. 21. 477 – The Delian league is formed. 22. 460 to 404 BC Peloponnesian wars between Athens and Sparta. 23. 338 BC - Philip of Macedonia begins conquest of Greece. 24. 355 BC - Romans begin conquest of Italy. 29. 27 BC - The Roman Empire begins as Caesar Augustus becomes the first Roman Emperor. 30. AD 286 – Diocletian divides the Roman Empire into 2 – east (Byzantine) and west. 31. 306 AD - Constantine becomes Emperor. Constantine would convert to Christianity and Rome would become a Christian empire. Prior to this Rome persecuted the Christians. 32. AD 476 – Rome is sacked and the Western Roman Empire falls. 33. AD 529 – the Emperor Justinian organizes all Roman law into a single code. 34. AD 1453 – the Byzantine Empire is destroyed by the Ottomans from Turkey.
