Course Description/Objectives
Course
Description:
Objectives:
NGR6423
This course examines latest research findings in the foundational sciences of human physiology
(cellular biology, cellular physiology, immunology and genetics) related to the major body
systems. These findings will then be applied to mechanisms important in disease pathogenesis,
pathophysiology, and clinical manifestations in selected disease states across the life span.
1. Review the basic foundational sciences related to alterations in human physiology
2. Describe alterations to normal human physiology and disease pathogenesis across the
body systems
3. Describe how these pathophysiologic mechanisms influence disease throughout the life
span

4. Apply these findings to alter the risk factors for disease formation
Delivery / Materials
Delivery Format:
Required Materials:
Required Text:
Online lecture, online discussions, and workbook assignments. Every Monday night at 8pm
students are encouraged to meet the instructors in an online discussion about the course
content. Sessions will be recorded for those that miss the session.
Students need to be able to access the internet and Canvas via home computer or at the USF
College of Nursing

6th Edition., 2010
Brashers, V., Clinical Applications of Pathophysiology, 3rd ed., Elsevier.
Grading Criteria
Grading System:
Types of
assessments:
Grades are determined by written workbook assignments, online quizzes, an online midterm
and a live final exam.
Exams: 60%
There will be one online midterm and an on-campus mandatory final exam on December 7th
2013. Each one will be worth 30% of the final grade. It is mandatory that the final exam will be
taken on computers in the computer lab at USF College of Nursing. The room will be posted
once it is reserved. Exams will include multiple choice, multiple answer, matching, and
true/false. No extra credit will be given.
Quizzes: 30%
There will be a quiz available for each module. You are required to complete 8 quizzes. Each

quiz will count 3.75% points towards your final grade.
Brashers Assignment: 10%
In the modules section of CANVAS are required cases in the Brasher's workbook. This
workbook must be turned in on the final exam day before you take your final examination.
Instructor Guidelines
Academic Integrity:
The USF College of Nursing expects students to maintain academic honesty in all courses. By
virtue of being registered in a nursing course, students agree to refrain from cheating. If
cheating in any form (academic dishonesty) is detected, appropriate action will be taken. (Refer
to USF Academic Dishonesty Policy).

The +/- system will be used.
93-100= A
90-92=A87-89=B+
83-86=B
80-82=B77-79=C+
73-76=C
70-72=CQuizzes will be given through the test application in CANVAS. They will be time sensitive
depending on the number of questions, and taken on your personal laptop or home computer.
The final exam will be a live mandatory exam. Students will not be permitted to access exam
once submitted online. Students will need to complete the exam, but are not allowed to write
questions down. If scratch paper is used during the exam, then the scratch paper MUST be
submitted to instructor when the student completes the exam and leaves the exam room. The
instructor will take each student concern into consideration and run a test analysis to determine
the effectiveness of a question.
The final exam due date is listed on the syllabus. This date is final. If for some reason a student
cannot attend the exam due to a disability, the student needs to contact the lead faculty and the
SDS center immediately.
Late assignments will have points subtracted from them as determined by the lead faculty.

Incomplete (I)
Definition: An Incomplete grade (“I”) is exceptional and granted at the instructor’s discretion only
when students are unable to complete course requirements due to illness or other
circumstances beyond their control.
This applies to all gradable courses, including pass/fail (S/U).
Students may only be eligible for an “I” when:
• Majority of the work for a course has been completed before the semester ends
• The work that has been completed must be qualitatively satisfactory
• The student has requested consideration for an “I” grade as soon as possible but no later than
the last day of finals week.
Withdrawal
Guidelines:
Withdrawal Policy (approved by CON Faculty Council 12/15/06; revised 1/19/07): Withdrawals
are limited to 1 per course, with a limit of 2 per undergraduate or graduate program.

withdrawing in excess of stated policy might be dismissed from the College of Nursing unless
the College of Nursing has pre-approved a documented Medical and/or Emergency situation.
