MyWritingLab Instructor Reference Guide for Writing Skills III
Academic Skills English - Camden County College
Fall 2013
Registering
In Writing III the MWL access code comes prepackaged with a new textbook. Students register for your course by going
to www.mywritinglab.com and entering the course id for your course. Course ids are listed under each course you are
teaching in your MWL account. If a student already has a Pearson account, he/she can sign in and then click to enroll in
your course; if a student doesn’t have a Pearson account, he/she can create one. Please tell your students to write
down their username and password in a safe place so they don’t forget it. Students who do not have an access code can
still register by using the 17-day temporary access, but if they do not purchase an access code after the 17 days their
access will expire.
Path Builder (Diagnostic Pre-Test)
Students should take the Path Builder sometime in the first few weeks of class. The test is 80 multiple-choice questions
based on the 20 grammar topics offered in their Learning Path. After students complete the test they will see a star for
topics they have mastered and a pencil for topics they still need to master.
Learning Path
There are seven modules in the Writing III Learning Path. Modules 1-4 include grammar topics, and modules 5,7, and 8
include writing/rhetoric topics. Topic titles and numbers are listed on the back of this sheet. Topics in bold are
required. The additional topics are suggested. For each topic there are four activities: Overview, Animation, Recall, and
Apply. Students master a topic by earning 80% or higher on both the Recall and Apply activities for each topic.
Activities/Assessments Manager
You can use the Activities/Assessment Manger to set due dates, reset activity attempts, or create assignments. To set
due dates click on ‘Change Dates & Assign Status’ and choose the topics you want to set dates for. To reset or update
activity attempts for students, find the assignment you want to update and choose ‘settings per student’ in the
dropdown box. Then follow the prompts to update attempts.
Gradebook
Check your MWL Gradebook regularly to view student progress. You can view student work individually or as a class,
and you can see overall scores as well as scores on specific assignments. You will notice that student overall scores are
based on results of the Recall and Apply activities. You can also reset or update activity attempts for students in the
gradebook by clicking on ‘exhausted resources’ in the ‘alerts’ section. The ‘alerts’ section is also a great resource for
identifying and emailing students who are either not completing or having difficulty with their MWL work.
Mastery Check (Diagnostic Post-Test)
Students will complete the Mastery Check at the end of the semester. It mirrors the content of the Path Builder and
students should see an increase in their score. It is not available to students until you assign it through the
Activities/Assessments Manager, which you will need to do during the final weeks of the semester.
Troubleshooting
For technical issues with MWL you and your students can contact Pearson Technical Support at 1-888-4338435(instructors) or 1-800-677-6337(students). For functional questions or assistance with the MWL program contact
