Philippine Society of Gastroenterology Midyear Convention 2011
Joseph C. Bocobo, M.D.
Chair, PSG Midyear Convention
Second Vice-President
The Midyear Convention was held on October 14 to 16, 2011 at the Avenue Plaza Hotel
in Naga City, Camarines Sur with the theme “Ambulatory Care for the Gut”. 189
participants attended the 3-day activity, 125 were PSG members.
Majority of the delegates took the early morning flights on October 14 to Legaspi City,
Albay. Before heading to Naga City, they were treated to a sumptuous breakfast at the
Cagsawa Ruins, sponsored by Xemed, wherein they got their first taste of delicious
Bicolandia food like Bicol express, pinangat and native longanisa. They also got to enjoy
the scenery and entertainment with Mount Mayon as their backdrop. The delegates
were shuttled to Naga City were they had their welcome lunch at Villa Caceres
sponsored by Westmont. Local entertainers performed the “Voyadores Festival”. This
depicts the Bicolanos spiritual fervor to Our Lady of Penafrancia whom they fondly call
“Ina”. In the afternoon, a fun-filled cocktails was hosted by Innogen to the delight of
the participants particularly those who joined the trivia games. The second day of the
convention proved to be equally exciting for all the delegates. The afternoon was filled
with fun and excitement as most of them had their first time in trying wake boarding at
4
the Camarines Sur Watersports Complex (CWC) sponsored by B. Braun, but they also
got to enjoy other watersports acitivities offered by the complex.
The scientific program included topics applicable to out-patient clinical practice namely,
prokinetics in functional dyspepsia, endoscopic procedures in the era of anti-platelet
therapy, updates in the management of abdominal pain in irritable bowel syndrome,
management of non-responsive constipated patients, out-patient management of
decompensated cirrhosis, and risk stratification of patients with abnormal liver function
tests comprehensively lectured by some of the distinguished members of the society
namely, Dr. Ma. Carla Sibulo, Dr. Augusto Galang, Dr. Ernesto Olympia, Dr. Theresa
Nadala, Dr. Eternity Labio and Dr. Erlinda Valdellon, respectively. The satellite
symposia, sponsored by some of our friends from the BioMedical Industry namely,
Westmont, Hi Eisai, Invida, Astra Zeneca and Takeda, were equally engaging.
There were two pre-convention activities which were held on October 13 at the Bicol
Medical Center. In the morning, there was a medical mission that catered to 150
patients and a “wet clinic” wherein 10 patients underwent gastroscopy and 5 patients
underwent colonoscopy. These were a joined effort of both Philippine Society of
Gastroenterology and Philippine Society of Digestive Endoscopy. Likewise, a lay forum
was held in the afternoon aptly themed “Talakayan patungkol sa Tiyan, Atay, at
Bituka”. Topics included acid related diseases, hepatitis B infection, fatty liver and colon
cancer. Speakers during the forum were Dr. Clyde Cope, Dr. Joey Yap, Dr. Cristy
Manlangit and Dr. John Rodenas. A total of 167 were in attendance during the forum.
Finally, the delegates were able to rest and relax during the fellowship night. “Dok,
Mardi Gras na!” was the party’s theme. Good food, upbeat Latin music, and overflowing
drinks treated the guests plus the colorful mask and beads given to them. The raffle
prizes added to the excitement which included an iPad2, netbook, iTouch, gift
certificates and cellular phones. The following morning, a Holy Mass was celebrated
before the breakfast symposium.

PSG CIVIC ACTION COMMITTEE REPORT
Dr. Frederick Dy
PRO
Chair, Civic Action Committee
Philippine Society of Gastroenterology
The Civic Action Committee of the PSG lined up a number of programs for the year. The
following are the concluded programs for the year: Vaccination of 120 children ages 112 yrs., tree planting sponsorship of 250 seedlings (GREEN), potable water supply
system (POWS) and the innovative novel program to teach right nutrition (GRRiN).
8
The vaccination program was done in an Aeta community located in Brgy. Sitio
Malakaya, Clark Field, Pampanga. This year, we planned to do vaccination on 120
children ages 1-12 years. It is the objective of this years Committee that the vaccination
be completed on all children. Last May 2011, we gathered 120 children in cooperation
with the local Barangay council to sign up for this endeavor. A complete list of the
names of the children were then recorded. Only the children who had the initial
vaccination were eligible to have the subsequent vaccination. The Committee also went
back July 2011 and finally December 2011. In the last vaccination, the children were
given food and toys to celebrate the season of giving. Dr. Frederick T. Dy is happy to
report that 102 (85%) have 2 vaccinations and 90 (75%) completed the 3 vaccines.
Vaccines that were unused were given to our member, Dr. Joseph Musngi for
completion of the vaccination of the remaining children. We would like to extend our
sincerest gratitude to Dr. Evan Ong and Dr. Joseph Musngi for dedicating their time for
this project.
The committee decided to sponsor 250 seedlings for our GREEN Project. In partnership
and coordination with the De La Salle Science Institute under Ms. Maria Cecilia Tirona,
tree planting was scheduled in a mangrove located in Calatagan, Batangas. This
meaningful project aimed to help our environment as part of our social responsibility.
The contract between our Society and De La Salle Science Institute is to make sure that
the seedlings will grow to an adult tree, i.e. replacing seeds that did not survive and
nurturing its growth. They will also send us pictures of the progress of the seedlings as
they grow into trees. Investing for our environment to protect our future!
This year, the target for our potable water project was a Mangyan community located in
Water, Baco, Oriental Mindoro. Together with our member, Dr. Glenda Umali-Marquez
and the Oriental Mindoro Medical Society headed by Dr. Arthur Sebastian, the water
stream development project was completed by December 2011. Clean, crisp, clear and
potable spring water was centralized into a basin and conduit was constructed and
distributed to the houses of our fellow countrymen. It is our hope that this worthy
project will be able to help our brothers and sisters to have free and easy access to
clean and potable water in Oriental Mindoro. Dr. Frederick T. Dy would like to extend
his heartfelt thanks to Dr. Glenda Marquez for helping us out in this project.
The Civic Action Committee together with the Nutrition Council chair Dr. Yvonne Mina
and members Dr. Cirilo Chan, Dr. Marika Kua and Dr. Russellini Magdaong embarked on
a new program designed to educate a community on how to properly utilize their
indigenous food crops with excellent nutritional value. This is to emphasize that proper
and adequate nutrition can be achieved without much expense. This new program is
aptly named GRRiN, acronym for Gastroenterologist Response to Right Nutrition was
also initiated in the Aeta community in Brgy. Sitio Malakaya, Clark Field, Pampanga last
July 2011. A cookout competition was held with 3 teams competing for the tastiest
food with the best nutritional value. The nutrition team was there to give their valuable
insights on the prepared food as well as give suggestions on the use of other native
food crops.
As PRO of the Society, He had finished 2 GUT newsletters for the fiscal year 2011-2012.
In addition, he was interviewed in Salamat Po Doc regarding acid related disorders and
promoted our beloved Society and emphasized the importance of seeking consult with a
PSG accredited Fellow.

The Consensus Guideline on Non-Variceal GI hemorrhoage was conceived by the board,
spearheaded by the head of the Committee on Councils. An unrestricted grant of one
million pesos was awarded to the society from Astra-Zeneca specifically from which all
expenses for this project was taken. The PSG board chose the members of the core
group. Representatives from training centers, either the chair or the training officer
were invited to participate in the exercise. Several meetings took place to brainstorm on
how the consensus shall be conducted. One highlight of the meetings is the gathering
of data from all over the nation that provided the basis for the construction of the
statements. From the data gathered, we could see the differences in the management
of NVUGIB among those practicing in the training centers and other centers. The Final
meeting was held last Feb 3-4 2012 at Balai Ysabel in Talisay, Batangas. Each of the 15
statements were thoroughly discussed and defended by those who were assigned the
said topics. The final draft of the manuscript of the consensus guideline will be printed
for distribution during the Joint Annual Convention. The consensus Guideline will also
be presented in a plenary session in the forthcoming convention. The next step will be
the dissemination of the consensus guideline nationwide through pocket conferences
and round table discussion in order to cascade it to all medical practitioners.

The PSG Nominating Committee helps identify the candidates with the best
qualifications to fill the PSG Board of Directors. In addition to this the PSG Nominating
Committee opens applicants for the Most Outstanding fellow. Transparency is
fundamental to the Nominating Committee's processes. Each year, the Nominating
Committee issues a call for nominations for vacancies.
Call for Nominations
Each year, the Nominating Committee issues a formal Call for Nominations for
vacancies. The Call provides information on the relevant membership qualifications,
offers guidance for voters by Know your candidates forms . In addition, the Call explains
the Nominating Committee’s selection process.
Developing a Nominations Strategy
In many cases, the Nominating Committee seeks candidates with a certain combination
of skills and attributes given a particular board’s current work plan, objectives, and
membership composition.
Culmination of the Election Process
It was suggested to have a computerized voting system. But due to cost effectiveness
implications, this suggestion was withdrawn.

On a personal note, my 11 year stint in the PSG board had been a rollercoaster
ride. I had many good moments and not so good moments. I guess you all know what I
mean. I would like to thank the PSG family for your support and trust and allowing us
to continue serving our beloved society during those trying days. Overcoming this trial
has made me a better and stronger person.
I would like to encourage our young, energetic, and talented members to please
get involved and serve our society. Let us remove the culture of indifference and
replace it with interest and concern to serve. I can assure you that despite the
difficulties, hardships, and heartaches, you will never regret having served our society.
I would like to thank our mentors, my predecessors, whom I have learned a lot
from. To the secretariat for working hard and bearing with our idiosyncrasies. To all the
members we have worked with through the years in the various committees. To PSDE,
headed by its president Dr Felix Domingo Jr. and HSP headed by Dra. Marlyn Arguillas,
and especially to our current officers and board of directors, who are so dynamic and
energetic, for all your support and hard work.
Lastly, I would like to thank our Lord Almighty for giving us wisdom and good
health so that we may serve, and of course, to my family, my wife, and two kids, for
their love, patience, and understanding. Now, I can tell them, there will be less
meetings and more time at home. Thank you very much.
