AN EXECUTIVE SUMMARY OF THE MGB RAPID FIELD ASSESSMENT
OF LANDSLSIDE PRONE BARANGAYS IN SURIGAO DEL SUR PROVINCE
In line with the recent Presidential Directive and NDCC resolutions following the
February 17 Southern Leyte landslide incident, and the need to fast track the
geohazards mapping program along the eastern seaboard of the Philippines, geologists
from the DENR - Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) conducted a rapid field
assessment of landslide prone barangays in the Province of Surigao del Sur. These
was undertaken in three phases: Phase I from April 24 to May 5 and from June 2 to
June 24, 2006 conducted by one (1) geologist of MGB Region XIII covering the
municipalities of Tandag, Tago and Bayabas, Cagwait, Marihatag, San Agustin,
respectively; Phase 2 from June 20 to July 15, 2006 conducted by ten (10) geologists of
the MGB Central and MGB Region VI-A, IV-B, XIII covering Bislig City and the
municipalities of Lingig, Hinatuan, Tagbina, Barobo, Lianga, San Miguel, Carrascal and
Cantilan and; Phase 3 from July 31 to August 4, 2006 conducted by three (3) geologists
of MGB Region XIII covering the municipalities of Madrid, Carmen, Lanuza and Cortes.
The rapid field assessment focused on barangays that are located on footslopes,
mid slopes and mountain ridges. Each barangay was rated with either low, moderate or
high landslide susceptibility. The rating parameters are as follows:
High
 Presence of active and/ or recent landslides
 Presence of numerous and large tension cracks that would directly affect the
community
 Areas with drainages that are prone to landslides damming
 Steep slopes
 Nearness to faults
Moderate
 Areas with indicative and/or old landslides
 Presence of small tension cracks and are located away from the community
 Moderate slopes
Low
 Low to gently sloping
 Absence of tension cracks
The rating of each barangay generally refers to the barangay proper since majority
of the population is located there.
Of the three hundred and ten (310) barangays of Surigao del Sur, three hundred and
three (303) barangays were assessed not only for landslide occurrence but also for
flooding susceptibility in some areas. Of the barangays assessed:

21 barangays have a high landslide susceptibility;
67 barangays have a moderate landslide susceptibility; and
97 barangays have low landslide susceptibility.
The rest of the one hundred and eighteen (118) assessed barangays in the province
have negligible landslide susceptibility but have varying degrees of susceptibility to
flooding.
The appropriate barangays were presented with a Landslide Threat Advisory. The
Advisory informs the barangays of their susceptibility to landslides and have the
corresponding recommendations particular to the barangay. The flood susceptible
barangays were also given suitable recommendation.
