Children’s Toys
Infants, toddlers, and young children never stop learning and expanding their minds.
Therefore hundreds of toy stores have taken this fact into consideration when marketing the
thousands of different toys that they sell. The two toy stores that I have used in my presentation
on children’s toys are a well-known toy company, Toys “R” Us and a smaller company that I
found on the internet, known as Growing Tree. Toys “R” Us sell many items for infants to
teenagers in products that range from candy to bicycles. Growing Tree’s toy selection, however,
is based more on learning and the cognitive development of the child. Both toy stores do a very
thorough job on creating and selling toys that will stimulate children mentally, physically,
verbally, and socially.
There are a total of 15 toys that I selected from both stores and with each toy there is a
description of recommended age, benefits of development, how to use/play with the toy, types of
play, durability, and cost. The recommended age simply encourages the buyer on the age of the
child that the toy will be best suitable for. The benefits of development list the cognitive skills
that will be presented to the child after the child has begun to play with the toy. How to use/play
with the toy indicates whether the toy is for a single child (interprasonal) or multiple children
(interpersonal), also whether the toy would be considered very quit, or one that involved much
activity. Durability simply states in summary what the toy is made out of plastic, wood, metal or
cloth, also if it is electric and uses batteries. Finally, the cost of the toy is given.
Piaget said that “as the child seeks to construct an understanding of the world, the
developing brain creates schemes, which are actions or mental representations that organize
knowledge.” In Piaget’s theory physical activity characterize infancy and mental schemes
develop in childhood (Lamb, Bornstein, & Teti, 2002). Many of these children’s schemes are

created by how and what they are presented with in the beginning months of their lives, therefore
toys will continue to create a great amount of cognitive development for all ages of children.
