This class is an introduction to biological science as set by the Washington State Essential Learning Requirements. We will be learning about the living world around us through the major areas of study including: *Science Skills * Atoms and Molecules *Ecology * Classification * Cell Theory * Genetics *Evolution * Animal and Plant Biology * Health Issues Assignments will be given at least once a week. All students are expected to hand in HIGH QUALITY work on time and neatly written. Every unit will have a lab component. We will be out of our seats and at the lab tables at least once a week. The lab safety sheet is your only reminder of how to conduct yourself while at the lab tables. Disruptive behavior will not be tolerated and will result in loss of lab privileges, detention and/or referral to the principal. Expectations: 1. Be seated before the bell rings. 2. Come to class with all materials. 3. Respect staff, other students and their property. 4. No drinking or eating in class. 5. No grooming during class. 6. Turn in work on time. Late work with an excused absence will be accepted for full credit following school policy. 7. Appropriate behavior is expected at all times. Inappropriate behavior will result in removal from the classroom possible loss of lab activities, referral to an administrator, and a student/parent conference with the teacher. 8. The teacher, not the bell, will dismiss students. Materials needed daily – Textbook (covered), daily planner, pen or pencil, colored pencils, glue stick, separate 3-hole folder or binder for science, and a composition book for CPR journal. Grading All assignments are graded using the following percentages: A AB+ B BF 93-100% 90-92% 88-89% 83-87% 80-82% 59% BELOW C+ C CD+ D 78-79% 73-77% 70-72% 68-69% 60-67% LABS & HOMEWORK QUIZZES TESTS/Projects 45% 10% 45% STUDENTS WILL RECEIVE A PROGRESS REPORT PRINTOUT AT LEAST 4 TIMES DURING EACH QUARTER. Use the science laboratory for authorized work only. Remove contact lenses and wear safety goggles when instructed to do so. Study the laboratory investigation before coming to the lab. Know how to use the safety equipment and know the location of fire extinguisher and eyewash station. 5. In case of fire, alert the teacher and exit the room. 6. Carefully check for the presence of any ignition source before using flammable materials. 7. Place broken glass and disposable materials in designated containers. 8. Report any incident, accident, injury, or unsafe procedure to the teacher at once. 9. Never touch, taste, or smell any substance unless directed specifically by the teacher to do so. 10. Handle chemicals carefully, check the label of every bottle or jar before removing the contents, and never return unused chemicals to reagent containers. 11. When heating a substance in a test tube, make sure that the mouth of the test tube points away from other people and away from yourself. 12. Use proper equipment to handle hot glassware. 13. Tie back long hair, remove dangling jewelry, and roll up sleeves and tuck in loose clothing. 14. At the end of the lab, clean the work area, wash and store all materials and equipment, and turn off all water, gas and electrical appliances. 15. No eating or drinking in the classroom and NEVER use lab equipment for eating utensils. 16. Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water before leaving the laboratory.
