PARTS OF THE PREDICATE (VERB)


The predicate of a sentence consists of the main verb and helping verbs
There can be up to three helping verbs in a sentence
She must have been running late.
must have been – helping verbs
running – main verb

List of helping verbs:
Is, am, are, was, were, be, been, being
Do, does, did, has, have, had
Can, could, shall, should, will, would,
May, might, must
SUBJECTS IN UNUSUAL POSITIONS

Sentences beginning with Here or There:
Here are the apples. (The apples are here.) Subject – apples,
Predicate – are
There were many books in the library. Subject - books, Predicate – were

Imperative sentences – states commands or requests – subject usually
not stated
Take your homework out. (You) take your homework out.
Subject - (you), Predicate – take
Please bring me your work.
Subject – (you), Predicate – bring

Questions
Does the class like bagels? (The class does like bagels.)
Subject – class, Predicate - does like

Sentences beginning with phrases or adverbs
Down the hall skipped the children. (The children skipped down the hall.)
Subject – children, Predicate - skipped
