Supervisor Paul Landi , has made flood prevention the Town’s top priority in 2014. The Town will be trying to work with DEC (Department of Environmental Conservation) officials as well as
Ulster County officials to establish a hazard mitigation plan to help alleviate potential floods in our Town.
The Town held their organization and regular Town Board meeting on January 6 th . Supervisor
Landi made the following appointments: Larry Queipo as Deputy Supervisor: Ryan Polacco as
2 nd Deputy Supervisor; Aimi Brown as Animal Control Officer; Ken Lauterbach to the Planning
Board; John Chick to the Zoning Board of Appeals; Daily Freeman as Official Town
Newspaper; and WKNY 1490 AM as Official Town Radio Station. The Town has created an
Ethics Board and appointed the following people: Lanette Beatty, Linda McCluskey and
Rosalie Sleight. Councilman Ed Gaddy was named as an alternate.
Highway Superintendent Ed Moore has requested that we remind our residents about the winter parking rules. With all the snow that we have received so far this winter, and with the groundhog predicting another 6 weeks of winter, it is important for our residents to help out the highway employees as they plow the roads. The parking of vehicles is prohibited on all Town roads between the hours of 9PM and 7AM and whenever snow removal operations are in progress.
Local Law #1 of 1991 is in effect from the 1 st day of October each year and continuing through the 15 th day of April. Let’s help our Highway Department out, so that they can plow and clear the Town roads as quickly as possible.

Since I have received so many positive responses about the Founder’s Day presentation, I thought it might be nice to provide our residents with the opportunity to view some of the many records we have in our archives. I’ve chosen Monday, March 3 rd and Wednesday, March 19 th from
4:00 to 7:00 PM for the display. The theme of the month will include folktales of our Town, homesteads within the Town and the folks that lived in our Town. Many of the people and places may be familiar to you. Many of the folktales and stories will surprise you. For instance, did you know that banshees once roamed Hallahan’s Hill? I’ll be on hand to answer your questions (if I can) and relate some of the more notable events that happened. Hope to see you there!
I hope to make records available to the public quarterly and will notify you of the dates and times as well as the themes. Look for announcements in the Town Newsletter, the Town website

) and the Town Board meetings.
If you have just moved to our Town, you must submit a STAR application (or enhanced STAR if over 65) to receive any discount on School Taxes. All STAR applications (including enhanced
STAR and Senior Aged STAR) must be received back in this office by MARCH 1, 2014.
Also, exemptions for property taxes (veterans, senior, etc.) must be received by March 1, 2014.

Our meetings are held on the 2 nd Wednesday of each month - starting at 1PM at the Town Hall.
The following were elected as officers for 2014: President - James Pirro; Vice President -
Robert Ferrigan; Secretary - Wayne Platte; and Treasurer - Dawn O’brien.
We have approximately 60 active members. All seniors (over 50) are welcome to join. Some activities held include the Pizza and Ice Cream luncheon in May; the Summer luncheon held at a restaurant to be selected in July; a picnic held at the pavilion in September and the Christmas luncheon held at a restaurant to be selected. We also look at possible bus trips. We also try to schedule interesting speakers or demonstrations at our meetings. Come on down and join us!!!
The Town’s Easter Egg Hunt will be held at the Town Field on Saturday, April 12 th at 11AM.
The rain date will be Saturday, April 19 th also at 11AM. This event is open to kids 0 - 12 years old. Please bring a bag or basket to collect your eggs.
The City of Kingston’s St. Patrick’s Day parade will be held on Sunday, March 16 th .

Registry have up to 31 days from the date you register to stop calling you.

. You can also register by phone at 1-888-382-1222.
Central Hudson is alerting customers of recent payment scams targeting residents by phone.
According to Charles A. Freni, Senior Vice President of Customer Services of Central Hudson,
“several Central Hudson customers were recently contacted over the phone by a person claiming to be with Central Hudson, indicating that there account is past due and directing them to pay their utility bill through a payback money card.” Freni said that the phone caller(s) are instructing the customers to use cash to purchase the payment cards from Walgreens, CVS or Rite Aid drug stores, and then to call a specific phone number to provide information regarding the card. The phone caller(s) indicate that if payment is not made in this manner, utility services will be shut off.
The phone caller(s), in another scam, claim to be with a national collection agency working on behalf of Central Hudson, attempting to obtain a payment over the phone by credit card.
“Central Hudson would never request a bill payment in this way, and has notified law enforcement officials of these scams. If there is any uncertainty regarding these phone calls, customers should hang up and call Central Hudson at (845) 452-2700 for confirmation,” said Freni.
The IRS is warning the public about a phone scam that targets people across the nation, including recent immigrants. Callers claiming to be from the IRS tell intended victims they owe taxes and must pay using a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer. The scammers threaten those who refuse to pay with arrest, deportation or loss of a business or driver’s license.
The callers who commit this fraud often:
Use common names and fake IRS badge numbers,
Know the last four digits of the victim’s Social Security number,
Make caller ID appear as if the IRS is calling,
Send bogus IRS emails to support their scam,
Call a second time claiming to be the police or DMV
The truth is the IRS usually first contacts people by mail - not by phone - about unpaid taxes. And the IRS won’t ask for payment using a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer. The agency also won’t ask for a credit card number over the phone.
If you get a call from someone claiming to be with the IRS asking for payment, here’s what to do:
Call and report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at
1-800-366-4484.

State Comptroller, Thomas DiNapoli, urges area residents to check for unclaimed funds. In the
Hudson Valley alone, DiNapoli said over $360 million in unclaimed money remains in state coffers.

The Fire Company’s famous Pancake Breakfast will be held on February 23 rd , March 23 rd , and
April 27 th from 8 to 11AM. Price is still $6.
On February 23 rd , the Fire Company will be raffling off 150 gallons of fuel oil …… tickets are $2 for 1 ticket or $10 for 6 tickets. Call RJ at 399-9711 for tickets.
On March 15 th , from 4-7PM, the Fire Company will be holding a spaghetti dinner. For $12, you would be eating a delicious full dinner which includes spaghetti, meatballs, bread, salad, desert and beverages.
The Fire Company meets on the second Monday of each month at 8PM. Come down and support your Fire Company.

The recent postal increase has made mailing of the Town newsletter extremely expensive. The price of the Town permit went up over $100 a year and the mailing of the individual newsletters has also increased by 10%. The Town Board realizes the significance of getting reliable information out to our residents in a timely manner. We can now send you the newsletter and other Town information through email instead of the U.S. Mail. If you wish to help us reduce our mailing costs, please sign up for email newsletters and notices on the Town website, at www.townkingstonny.us
. Remember: cutting expenses, helps us to lower your property taxes.
The Town Board has joined the Ulster County Legislatures and other municipalities in passing a resolution asking the Federal government to reconsider the closing of the Social Security Office in
Lake Katrine. If that office closes, the nearest Social Security Office will be Poughkeepsie. We feel that the office closure will put a hardship on our senior citizens that can’t use the on-line system to have their questions and concerns answered. County Executive Hein has been in contact with the Federal government and has offered County property in Lake Katrine’s Business
Resource Center as a possible solution to moving the Social Security Office to Poughkeepsie.
