VOLUME 23 NO. 5 PUBLISHED BY FOXMOOR LAKES MASTER ASSOCIATION, INC APRIL 2012 Dedication La Posta Clubhouse Pictures express the sentiments of the residents of Foxmoor better than words… 1 L-R: The LaPosta Family: Kim Brenneman, Diane LaPosta, Shauna Killian and Kerri Gantt (Photos by Ray Brown) The La Posta Clubhouse Dedication Committee and the Master Board thank the residents of Foxmoor for their generous contributions to make the dedication successful. The large turnout for the Dedication spoke highly of the respect and love that the residents had for Dick. Attorney Joe Adams presented a very interesting and meaningful expression of the kind of person that Dick was. The pictures included with this newsletter show the response of the family and the community to the La Posta Clubhouse dedication. Sandra Lignell, Chair of the Clubhouse Dedication Committee 2 Newsletter Distribution Changes Following an analysis of the costs involved in printing and distribution of our “The Voice of Foxmoor”, the Editors have recommended and the Master Board has approved distribution by email to all of Foxmoor Lakes residents commencing with the December 2012 issue. A few paper copies will continue to be available at the Clubhouse, and by special arrangement from each Association’s Board members, for those residents who do not have access to email. The current process of printing about 500 copies and distribution by employees of Management results in a monthly cost of about $500 for each of the 5 months during which the Newsletter is published. This change will result in a savings of about $2500 annually to Foxmoor residents and can be used to help as an offset in other areas of our Budget. The cooperation of every Foxmoor resident in providing the Editors with current email addresses is essential to the success of this program. Both of us pledge to maintain your email addresses in confidence and use them only for the intended purpose. Please email your email address to: <foxmoorvoice@embarqmail.com> The Board has also appointed a committee to look into the establishment of a website which would provide online access 24/7 to not only the Newsletter but to other Foxmoor Lakes’ up-todate information that would be useful to all residents. Lew Rubino & Jerry Dudak Management As another great season at Foxmoor winds to a close, many of you are preparing to head north for the summer. As you do so, please remember a couple of small things: Turn the water off to your unit before you leave and be mindful of things left on your lanai. The summer months in North Fort Myers brings large storms, many with high winds and plenty of rainfall. Items left on lanais can do damage if caught in the wind or be ruined if caught in the rain. Thank you to everyone who attended the Annual Meeting in person or who remembered to submit a proxy. We had a good, productive meeting and seated our new HOA and Master Boards of Directors. I look forward to working with them through this next year. From the completion of the Quad lanai fence project to the building of a new bridge at Libby’s Lake to the beautiful dedication of the LaPosta Clubhouse, it was a busy, fast-paced season. Thank you very much to everyone who took the time to offer your wisdom, suggestions, ideas and encouragement to all of us here at Gulf Shores as we made our way through this difficult year. It was a pleasure getting to know some of you for the first time and getting to know others of you better. We will be spending the summer months working hard to maintain Foxmoor as one of the nicest looking communities in Southwest Florida! I look forward to seeing our year round residents throughout the summer and for those of you leaving for the season: Safe Travels and See You Soon!! Looking forward to seeing everyone in the Fall. Diane Cook Euchre The month of March was one of the best attended for a very long time. We averaged approximately 25 players per week. Thanks to every one that helped to make it a banner month. Whether we win or lose, it is great just getting out and spending time with our friends and neighbors. We wish you all a great happy and healthy summer and look forward to seeing you next fall. If there are enough players to fill at least two tables, we will continue to play the first and second Tuesday nights of April. P.S. Everybody help to keep Foxmoor clean and green. Jim Fegley Golfers Thanks for a good year Hope all enjoyed the sports banquet and see all next year with start date TBA. Ray Brown Games Games were well attended this past season. We look forward to more participating next year. New games can be added at any time. This year Mahjongg was added. Plan to join us on Thursday afternoons at the La Posta Clubhouse. Playing games is good exercise for the mind Sandra Lignell Walk Off The Pounds Ken and Lorraine LaBeda continue to lead the walk away the pounds on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings at 9 a.m. at the La Posta Clubhouse. Sandra Lignell Bocce Well another fun-filled and successful season has come to a close. We had 16 teams, this season, the most ever! That means that 69 Foxmoorians had a chance to show their skills over the 11 week playing season. 5 For a while it looked like we would have a three way tie for first place, but the final play day resulted in a grand champion…Team 5 “Lima” consisting of Dick Van Dyke, Judy Drury, Lorraine Lebeda and Ken Lebeda took the First Place ranking with 9 wins & 2 losses. Three teams came in tied for 2nd place with an 8-3 record and two teams tied for 3rd place with a 7-4 record. The rest were spread out with one 4th place team, three 5th place teams, four 6th place teams and two teams tied in the Booby Prize position. This is the 10th year of Bocce league at Foxmoor. It was started by Shirley Stevens and her late husband, Jim. We still have 13 of the original players participating this year! Next season, we are looking into having 4 referees. That would allow us to split the morning into two 2 hour refereeing periods and relieve the long 4+ hour stretch in the sun and on their feet. If you would be willing to volunteer, please let one of know. Ron Nunes & Jerry Dudak Swimming Pools Phase 1 pool will be closed after 4/8/12 for repair. It should take about a week and half to finish. Then they start the Club House pool. So by next fall we will have three like-new pools. I expect all chairs also to be like new and all working fine. Have a good summer and stay healthy. See you next fall. Please note that all pools must remain covered each evening until the Pool Heaters are turned off for the summer season…the nights are still cool and the pool heaters are costly to run when the cover is off…its your and everyone’s money, so please be considerate. David Cohen, Pool Committee Tennis Open tennis 8:30 Monday through Saturday at least until Easter after which many players will be heading North. Thanks to Jim Michaels, Jim Macklin, Merv Hicks and Ron Reid for sanding and painting the benches. Have a good summer everyone and be safe. Diane Cook Foxmoor – On The Wildside A few weeks ago I awoke to a heavy tapping sound. As I looked up in the slash pine just outside the corner of my lanai I spotted a piliated woodpecker chipping away. These large woodpeckers love to drill holes in decaying trunks of trees looking for insects. They make a distinctive knocking sound as they chip away. Piliated woodpeckers make their homes primarily in the trunks of decaying pine trees by 6 creating a circular opening in the tree which leads to an inner cavity where they nest. The sap from the decaying tree provides a barrier that helps to keep predators out. Some 15 to 19 inches long with a bright red crest, the pileated woodpecker is both spectacular and noisy. When this huge woodpecker is hammering on a tree in search of beetle larvae the noise is so loud it sounds like someone chopping wood with an axe. Some tidbits about the piliated woodpecker Include: • It was the inspiration for the cartoon character Woody Woodpecker • It is an “ecosystem engineer. Other birds and mammals rely on piliated woodpecker cavities for survival • It is the 3rd largest woodpecker in North America although the Imperial and the Ivory-Billed Woodpeckers are generally regarded to be extinct. • Territory size varies between 1000 and 4000 acres which they defend year-round. • They are monogamous • Northern birds tend to be larger than Southern populations. Pileated woodpeckers feed on carpenter ants, the larvae of carpenter bees, beetles and fruit. In summer, in Florida you often see them pecking at the bright red seeds in Magnolia cones. I have also seen piliated woodpeckers on Crystal Lake Drive but their habitat was disturbed when the area behind the Legion was destroyed. If you happen to walk by parking lot 3 (first parking lot on the right as you enter Foxmoor Lakes on Foxlake Dr.), look high above in the slash pines on the right side of the first condo. You’ll probably have to stand on the other side of the parking lot to see a large stick nest in the pine behind the middle of the building. In the nest are young redshouldered hawks and/or their parents which come and go bringing food to the youngsters. I’ve been watching the hawks build their nest and now can see the fruits of their labors. A common hawk of wet deciduous wood-lands, they are the noisiest of the buteos, especially during spring court-ship. A perch-hunter of the forest under-story, they feed on frogs, snakes, lizards, and small mammals. Females are larger than males, and the sexes similar in appearance. Homeowner’s Association Hello to all, it’s almost the end of the season; Easter is coming. I hope everyone had a good time in Florida this year. The weather was great with no major storms this year. We had some big losses this year, with the loss of Dick and John, but we are going forward. We have stayed in the black so far, but work is still being done. We have one home with termites, and I want to get all homes inspected. I also want to setup 2 committees to inspect the sidewalks and outside of the buildings. David Cohen, President 7 News from Longleaf Looks like homeowner improvements are still in progress. Jackie Hanley has a newly painted driveway that looks great and kudos to neighbor Gene (Shirley’s husband) Anderson for doing such a nice job on it …and also on the previously reported upon houses that he painted. The HOA has commenced foreclosure proceeding on 5571 in order to recoup substantial arrears in maintenance fees and to be able to improve the necessary repairs to the structure. For your convenience, tickets for all Social Committee events are available from Suzanne or me at 5610 or call 731-6583 for home delivery! Jerry Dudak Arbor Lakes I The dedication for the Dick LaPosta memorial at the Clubhouse on Sunday March 11 was a touching ceremony. The repainted signs naming the facility the LaPosta Clubhouse and the new bronze plaque mounted on the exterior wall are attractive as well as meaningful. The extended LaPosta family was present and remarks by Joe Adams, attorney and News-Press columnist were meaningful and enlightening to all. Tom R. Veal Arbor Lakes II It certainly has been a sad season firstly with Dick LaPosta leaving us and now, more recently, John Marriott. We extend our sincere condolences to his wife Donna and to all the family. John was such a sincere, pleasant and hard working individual. He will be sorely missed. By the time this newsletter hits the press Elaine Rose will have had her son John with wife Barbara and children (Jack 11 and Gavin nearly 8) visiting with her. John and family are also planning a few days at Captiva and a few days at Disneyland. Hope they had a wonderful time all over and great weather. Dennis & Eva Allen (who are from Indiana) have now taken over their condo at 5712. They spent the whole week of March 18th buying new furniture and sprucing up the condo with friends. They’ve been washing & scraping every nook and cranny and also putting in new screens. The place looks real nice from the outside which is great. We wish them many years of pleasure in Foxmoor Lakes. On a negative note renters in the 5716 building who were moving out tore out all the kitchen and bathroom cabinets to take with them. Luckily somebody saw this happening and reported this to Dan who contacted the police. The individual was arrested after being forced to return the cabinets to the unit. Unfortunately the condo has been left in a mess. Beware who you rent to? Sadly another glorious season comes to an end in our beautiful Foxmoor Lakes community. We wish all the snowbirds safe travels back home. See you next fall. We wish those who live here a wonderful and healthy summer. Richard Lauzon 8 Arbor Lakes III Well, it's that time of year again. Many of us Snowbirds will be heading back north and the year round residents can get back to peace & quiet. This will be the last Newsletter until next season. A couple of our neighbors have been experiencing physical difficulties. John Sobczyk had to return to the hospital for the second time in two months. He has just returned after fifteen days. Also John Reynolds continues to have physical problems. Here's hoping their health improves. Hope you all have a Happy Easter, a great spring, summer and fall seasons. See you next winter. Larry Tretyak Arbor Lakes IV The Arbor Lakes IV picnic was held on March 25 with 21 people attending. Good food was enjoyed by all. Following the meal we played games including guess the number of jelly beans in a jar. Michelle, Frank Fatica’s grand-daughter,came the closest to the right amount of jelly beans. Joya and Doug won one game and Inga and Jack won 2 games in the balloon tossing contests. We ended the party playing Catch Phrase which was great fun for the participants. We thank Frank, his daughter Cathy and Karen and Joe Schiavone for all their efforts in facilitating this great picnic. We are sorry to report that Helen Sorrels (building 15011, unit 206) has died. We extend our sincerest sympathy to her family. Our Association sent flowers to the memorial service. Also several of our members attended the service. We wish a safe trip north to all the snowbirds and we look forward to seeing you all in the fall. Rose and Lew Rubino Arbor Lakes V It’s hard to believe and sad to say that this is the last newsletter for this season. Where did the time go? Marie and Bill Vasiluth had a short but enjoyable visit with their daughter Carrie who spent a few days with them. Also Ron Pattison's brother and sister in law spent some time away from the cold weather to enjoy the wonderful times at Foxmoor. The maintenance crew has been busy doing the following: Some of the trees and bushes were trimmed, the bridge was cleaned; mold was removed and then power washed. They also purchased and planted a new tree. The tree was planted by the picnic table so as to provide shade when using the picnic area. The new tree ( which kind of looks like a bush) will be left to grow this summer and then in the fall it will be trimmed to provide proper shade for the picnic area so Please Do Not Trim this new tree. A Big Thanks again to the crew who helped with the projects this season. Board meeting actions: Discussion about the possibility of building a cover for over the mailbox area, the board members will do further research on this project. Review of budget and minutes 9 from last meeting. The Next Board meeting is Wednesday April 18th, 10:00 a.m., at the clubhouse. Please try to attend. The second annual picnic was held we had a good time and good food with our neighbors. All who were there left with a full stomach and fond memories, hope to see everyone at our next annual picnic. Reminder: Please Do Not Feed the wildlife. they are beautiful to watch but we do not want them to become dependent on food from humans. A note to our friends who are going back North, have a safe trip and enjoy your summer. Also to our full time residents it was great seeing and spending time together with all of you we will miss you. Have a healthy, safe and fun summer. I know Cricket will also miss all her four legged friends especially Jodie, they enjoyed their times together. Quote: Everything comes to him who hustles while he waits so remember to keep the hustle in your life. Debbie Pattison Foxmoor Village This will be the last newsletter of “the season” and as such I would like to wish all of our "seasonal” residents a safe trip back to their other "paradise" and look forward to their return next year. To our 'full time' residents, I also wish the best for the upcoming spring and summer and hope to see all around the Village. Thanks again to all who have complied with our Phase One of "Restore the Village". Gulf Shores and your association will be addressing any remaining violations. At our March meeting, we briefed all in attendance of the upcoming intentions and projects. We appreciate your continued support and input of your Village plans for the upcoming year. Thank you also goes out to residents who have agreed to serve on the Fining Committee as we address concerns of our residents. It is unfortunate that we have to take this course of action but certain things must be addressed to maintain the quality of life that we wish and deserve to have. Hope to see many of you at our next meeting April 17th, Ray Brown Sawmill It is that time of the year when we say goodbye to our snowbirds. Have a safe trip and we will look for your return in the fall. Get well wishes to Dottie Blatnick as she recovers from surgery. Her daughter Debbie from South Carolina was here during the surgery. Thanks to the Social Committee for all the hard work they have done this year. Have an enjoyable summer. Ruth Reynolds 10 Palm Lakes This season has been great. Everybody is out walking, riding, swimming, doing sports, and most of all, attending functions at “The LaPosta Clubhouse”. All the breakfasts and dinners have been very well attended and the food is darn good 99.9% of the time. Well, every one needs room for small mistakes sometimes. Many conversations develop at the mailboxes and are carried on to others when seeing this one or that one. We have pretty much developed a “let them know” group. All kidding aside, it is great to see so many friends and neighbors talking and enjoying where they are right now. We have many residents that are ill. Ken Walsh, and Woody Reynolds from Crystal Lake Ln and Lois Passmore from Crystal Lake Dr. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers and any of our feeble residents as well. We just came home from the last dinner function of this Season. The fish was absolutely delicious and the conversations were delightful. Everyone seemed to be having a great time. Here we are rapidly approaching the Season’s end. It makes me feel somewhat saddened. It is that time of the Year when everybody is thinking of returning to their Northern address and leaving behind all the rest of us. But, these are our lives, so as you pack up to move back North, we will remain behind and carry on until you return. We wish all of you a happy summer. Drive carefully as you travel, Sharon Ward, V.P. Aluminum Can Tabs I want to thank everyone at Foxmoor Lakes, on behalf of our local Ronald McDonald House, for saving and donating their aluminum tabs during the past year. The collection boxes at our Clubhouse were overflowing with your caring and generosity. As you know I collect them and take them to the “House” where, because of their pure aluminum content, they can be converted to much needed cash for the operations of the Ronald McDonald House. Keep saving them and I’ll collect them again. Bev Rose Donations to the Needy Foxmoor residents; if you can spare any good used sneakers sizes 10-13, I will see that they go to a deserving homeless person in Lee County. Drop off at my house 15508 Crystal Lake Dr or call and I can pick up if necessary. (410-2127) Fred Schilffarth 11 Note from the Editors We would like to thank everyone involved with the newsletter especially; The contributors whose names appear in each newsletter.
