What are some of the big ideas that students will walk away with after participating in
this activity? (essential knowledge)
__Students will know the purpose and function of each of the 6 simple machines. They
will be able to recognize each of the simple machines and how they are used in our
everyday lives.
Briefly state how arts activities are infused into this lesson:
__Children will design their own interactive bulletin board with given art supplies being
sure to incorporate the 6 simple machines
List ALL materials necessary to carry out this activity.
Scissors, construction paper, glue, markers, crayons, popsicle sticks, pencils, colored
pencils,
Briefly list the teaching steps in order of classroom instruction. (summary of beginning,
middle and end)
__Class will briefly discuss each simple machine and what they are used for. Students
will be asked to provide various examples of simple machines that can be found
throughout their everyday life. Students will watch simple machines PowerPoint.
Students will then be divided into groups and asked to design their own interactive board
with various simple machines labeled.
How would you assess student learning to ensure mastery of the correlating SOL?
(informal, formal)
Students will be given the opportunity to present their board to the class showing how
their simple machines work. Students will be shown objects and have to distinguish what
simple machine it is.
How will you manage the class during the activity? What will you tell the class to ensure
a successful lesson?
Groups will be assigned ahead of time. Supplies will be set out for each group. A list of
sample themes will be provided. A sample board will be prepared. The class will be
given a specific amount of time to complete. Boards will be displayed.
How will you incorporate/include special needs/ELL/ESL students?
Children who cannot participate can be showed pictures of the playground and be asked
to point out different simple machines. They could also to a computer find various clip
art images to create a playground. They can point out each simple machine.
