Textbook/online assignments Pass Assured’s Pharmacy Technician Training Program. CD-ROM Prerequisites: 1. Completion of “Fundamentals for Health Professions” Internet Course, Part I, and II or equivalent, for High School students with a final grade of 80% or better. 2. Medical Terminology is highly recommended. 3. Must be a high school senior to take this course 4. Online courses require students to be independent learners and to have good reading skills and good basic computer skills. 5. This course requires students have strong math skills. Cost(s) to the student: $215.00 for the course will be paid by the Region 2 Professional-Technical Academy. However, students will be expected to repay this cost if they do not complete the course by May 14, 2010. Students pay Region 2 Professional-Technical academy $70 (non-refundable). If the course is completed, the students will keep the textbook. On completion of the course students are eligible to take the National Pharmacy Tech Certification exam, which will cost the student approximately $130.00. Course Length: Approximately 150 hours of course work plus 45 hours of clinical experience in a pharmacy. Course Objective: To train pharmacy technicians to pass the Pharmacy Technician Certifying Board certification exam. 1 Course Description: The Mosby’s Pharmacy Technician Principles & Practice textbook and workbook are designed as a fundamental yet comprehensive resource that represents the very latest information available for preparing pharmacy technician students for today’s challenging job environment. This textbook covers all the theory and skills set forth by several national certifying bodies, including the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) and the American Pharmaceutical Association (APhA). Each chapter has on online assignment and test followed by proctored comprehensive examinations taken at school. The Pass Assured Interactive CD-ROM is designed to train Pharmacy Technicians to pass the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board exam. The interactive testing portion of this product is located on secure web servers. Its multimedia presentation is easy-to-follow, complete with audio, video, and graphic presentations. Realistic practice tests will let students know when they are ready for the National Certifying exam. Multiple-choice quizzes can be taken and repeated by students at home. Course Topics: Orientation: Orientation introduces the student to basic terms and definitions. An introduction to the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board and the exam is given. PTCB recertification details are provided with easy to follow steps for maintaining certification. Federal Law: Federal Law focuses on legislation that affects the Pharmacy Industry. From Food and Drug Administration laws to the Poison Prevention Act, Federal Laws that have guided Pharmacy are presented. The method used in determining a valid DEA# is studied. The section does not cover state and local laws. (State and local laws vary greatly, thus, providing this material in this product is not practical.) The PTCB exam only covers Federal Law. Medication Review: Medication Review introduces the Pharmacy Technician to Pharmacology. The study guide focuses on maintaining the proper instructional level suited for a Pharmacy Technician. The varied types of drugs, prescription types, medication dosage forms, and medical devices are discussed. Drug interactions on the human body’s major systems, such as the central nervous system, peripheral nervous system, cardiovascular system and other systems of the human body are introduced. The study concentrates on commonly used drug classes that would be of most concern for the Pharmacy Technician. Aseptic Techniques: Aseptic Techniques gives the student a 'bird's eye' view of preparation procedures for parenteral products. Pictures taken during actual preparation of various sterile products are used to illustrate a particular topic. Laminar airflow and Horizontal airflow hoods are covered with pictures and diagrams. Devices used in the preparation of sterile products are illustrated. The study topic provides the basics of Aseptic Techniques with emphasis toward possible testing topics. 2 Calculations: Pharmacy calculations are an essential function of the Pharmacy Technician. The PTTP's calculation section provides a refresher path through the aspects of Pharmacy mathematics. Many of our example calculations are done using different methods, thus, providing the student a choice for calculating Pharmacy math problems that best suits the individual's needs. Our calculation section provides an excellent tool for learning Pharmacy math. Our calculations are performed 'in motion', with a timed audio presentation. Pharmacy Operations: Pharmacy Operations is the core of the Pharmacy Technicians responsibilities. Day to day operations, interfacing with customers, maintaining patient records, and assuring the Pharmacy meets all State, Federal and local requirements are covered. Managing proper inventory controls is vital in assuring continuing success of the Pharmacy business. An overview of insurance claims and "Third Party" reimbursement is provided. Independent Study: Unit quizzes – each unit has quizzes and a unit test that must be taken and passed with a minimum grade of 70%. All unit tests can be retaken as many times as needed to master the 70% score. Final Exam – This is a cumulative exam that is taken at the end of the course when you have passed each unit with a 70% or better. You are allowed (1) attempt of the final exam. Assignments – Units may have an assignment that is graded. Clinical: Clinical - 45 hours of experience is required. The Pharmacy Tech student must register with the Idaho Board of Pharmacy, requiring the supervising pharmacist’s signature and a $35.00 fee (paid by the student). Two forms are required: the application for Technician-in-Training and a waiver (of the requirement to be 18 and a high school graduate). The checklist and log must be completed by the pharmacist each time the student is at clinical. Copy of log and checklist needs to be mailed to Sheri Daly at end of the course before credit will be issued for a grade. Course timing: The course begins in the fall semester and is one year long. The 45 hours of clinical can begin after the student has passed Unit 1 of the course with an 80% or better. Certification: The requirements to test are that the student must be a H.S. grad and no felony record. However, you can get a waiver on the H.S. graduation requirement with a letter from the principal saying that you are scheduled to graduate in the spring. 3 Idaho recognizes 2 different certifying organizations: 1. The Pharmacy Technician Certifying Board (PTCB) exam costs $129 and their website is www.ptcb.org 2. The Exam for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians (ExCPT) costs $105 and their website is www.nationaltechexam.org/home.html Academic Honesty: Academic honesty mandates the use of one’s own thoughts and materials in writing papers, taking of tests, or completing other classroom or shop/lab related activities. Students who aid others in any infraction of academic honesty are considered equally guilty. The concept of academic honesty is designed to assure a uniform standard against which to evaluate all students and to prevent cheating. Students are expected to report infractions to their instructors. Violation of this policy may lead to a student’s failure of this course.
