Activity 1: Drug Effects (part one)
As a class brainstorm – What are some PIEDS used in sport.
Examples include:
Steroids
Diuretics
Peptide hormones & Analougues (includes EPO and hGH)
Beta Blockers
Narcotic Analgesics
Alcohol
Cannabis
Tobacco
Blood Doping
Supplements
Hurdle: In groups of 4 investigate the following for a selected PIED from the class brainstorm
list.


What sports has the PIED been detected in or banned from?
How does this PIED impact sport performance?

What are the health risks associated with this PIED for short, medium

and long term health outcomes?
What healthy choices enhance performance in the same way as this
PIED?
This can be done as a list, a picture with animations, or another format that can be put up in

Other students to take notes during their class mates’ presentations and write down any
questions they might have. Notes should be in 4 columns – How performance is enhanced,

present.
The notes that they have and the information posted around the class room will be used for
the assessment.
