Metallurgical Engineer:
GENERAL PURPOSE OF JOB:
Identify material and heat treat process requirements to meet customer part specifications and
engineering specifications. Develop, maintain, and enforce proper metallurgical lab requirements.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor’s degree in metallurgy (B.A., B.S.) from four-year college or university; or one- to
two-years related experience and/or training, with ASM Heat Treatment of Steel Certification; or
equivalent combination of education and experience.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Reasonable proficiency in English (reading, speaking and writing). Ability to read, analyze, and
interpret the most complex documents. Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive
inquiries or complaints. Ability to write speeches and articles using original or innovative

Chief Metallurgist:







Supervises, enhances and monitors metallurgical testing and analysis practices for the site.
Reviews, recommends and implements new or enhanced testing equipment or protocols.
Reports metallurgical or process issues/problems and makes recommendations to
appropriate site management for correction.
Supervises or may serve as technical expert on the most complex metallurgical testing.
Contributes to site strategic planning and budgeting efforts for metallurgical testing.

Job Summary:
The qualified R/D Engineer (Glass Technology) in the Fiber Glass Fundamental Science team
will lead and support research and technical programs aimed at developing new fiber glass
melting and forming technologies for new glass compositions as well as improving existing fiber
glass melting and forming processes. This position will be responsible for exploring new ways
to make fiber glass, both from the chemistry and processing angles. The successful candidate
will have sound scientific understanding of glass chemistry, melting and forming and will be
capable of bringing scientific concepts from the lab to commercialization in manufacturing. She
or he will assist with equipment and process design and design of experiments to determine
suitability of techniques proposed for glass melting and forming systems. This engineer has also

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
 Supervise and manage the engineering function for Titanova’s new projects.

Purpose:
The Radioisotope Power Systems Program within the Materials Science
and Technology Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory
(www.ornl.gov) is seeking a Metallurgical Welding Engineer to join our
team.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Position has the responsibility to manage the iridium alloy clad vent set
(CVS) manufacturing production at ORNL. This position is responsible for
scheduling production activities to meet Radioisotope Power Systems
Program shipment commitments; contributing to the establishment of
annual budgets and controlling the costs through the year; maintaining
trained production personnel from the Fabrication Division to perform the
component fabrication; and providing the technical leadership for
directing the materials manufacturing processes. CVS components are
produced to the requirements of product specifications using approved
procedures and tooling that are under full Configuration Control per an
established Quality Assurance Plan. The position is required to maintain
and purchase all consumable supplies required for CVS production.
Manufacturing technique and process parameter development are
required for establishing production procedures for new or modified CVS
designs. Environmental, safety, health, and housekeeping issues must
be addressed proactively. In addition, this position is required to perform
statistical trending analyses of critical CVS attributes to evaluate product
conformity to specification requirements and identify changes from the
nominal dimensional measurements.
Qualifications Required:
Position requires a minimum of a B.S. Degree in Material Science,
Metallurgical Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering and at least five
years of experience of working with manufacturing processes and testing
associated with fabricating refractory metal alloys and precision
components. The position requires a background in materials
characterization methods and analyses. Experience with hightemperature vacuum furnace heat treating, metal forming, machining,
welding, dimensional inspection, and chemical cleaning are important to
the position. The candidate must possess good interpersonal skills to
work with machinists, sheet metal, welders, dimensional inspection, and
maintenance personnel from the Fabrication Division to produce the CVS
components. The candidate also must have excellent communication
skills, both written and verbal, for interactions with various customer,
design, research, development, and vendor personnel. Computer skills
and competence with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Power Point products
are required as well. RELOCATION INCLUDED.
Remarks: US citizenship and a DOE L clearance are required (a Q
clearance is preferred).

Develop glass for applications with specific chemical resistance.
Organize analysis and benchmarking of commercial glass materials and select materials for
optimum performance.
Research and develop new glass compositions through experimentation and/or computer
simulation work and introduce new raw materials.
Support scale-up and production trials in order to translate new materials, compositions or
processes from R&D lab to manufacturing.
Interface with vendors in all aspects of glass requirements.
Publish reports and/or presentations at regular intervals on assigned work projects.
Interact with current and potential customers to determine technical requirements for new
applications, to provide technical support, and to troubleshoot and resolve existing product problems.
Evaluate new product opportunities with attention to manufacturability, cost, and equipment
investment.
Design, execute and analyze experiments to define and optimize process requirements for
both new products and improved manufacturing practices for existing products.
Implement changes in process technology required to bring new products to commercial
success and to improve costs and profitability of existing product lines.
Maintain glass science expertise by attending appropriate seminars.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
 Assess legal, regulatory and internal compliance requirements. Advise site management of gaps

 Monitor, report and control unit factors (ie. product yield, waste generation, raw material
consumption). Analyze cost information, production data and analytical results to maintain

 Work with R&D and marketing to develop, design and scale-up new ceramic products and
processes.
 Develop and maintain PFD’s and P&ID’s for assigned areas. Assist production in development
of Budget Standards.
 Provide technical leadership in development, acquisition and documentation of PSI (ie. basis of
safety, basis of environmental control, PFD, P&ID, MOC, PSSR, PHA, critical operating
parameters, relief device sizing, safety interlocks, equipment design, RTK training).
 Provide technical leadership during new process scale-up, technology transfer, equipment
qualification and startups (ie. NPR, plant requirements & setup, production costing, capital
project scope, production reporting).
 Develop, support &/or direct engineering projects throughout the facility.

and investigate incidents of non-compliance to establish root cause and corrective / preventative

Provide technical guidance and training for operations personnel in resolution of daily production
