SPONSORED BY THE FAIRHOPE EDUCATIONAL ENRICHMENT FOUNDATION Student Packet YOUNG PATRIOT AWARD Sixth Grade 1 AWARD INFORMATION What is this award? The Young Patriot Award Sixth Grade is sponsored by the Fairhope Educational Enrichment Foundation (FEEF) to provide a fun, challenging way to learn more about our country through historical fiction. Students must read two historical fiction novels about our nation’s history since the Civil War. They must complete two book reports, one per semester, in order to earn the award. Who is eligible? Any 6th grade Fairhope public school student is eligible for this award! When are the book reports due? The first book report is due by Friday, December 9th, 2011 to a FEEF representative at your school. An announcement will be made about where and when to turn in the report. No late reports will be accepted. If you have missing information, or if your report does not qualify for the award, you will have one opportunity to rewrite your report in January. The second book report is due Friday, March 16th, 2012 and the above procedures apply. No late reports will be accepted, and if rewrites are necessary, they will take place in April. Who judges the book reports? FEEF representatives read the book reports and grade them with a rubric on a points scale. You must achieve 43 out of 50 points on each report in order to earn the award. When is the award given? Students who complete both book reports and earn at least an 86%, or 43 our of 50 points, will be honored and presented with the Young Patriot Award on awards day at the end of school. Recipients will also have their picture submitted to the local newspapers. 2 Historical Fiction Book Report Format Directions: Choose one of the books on the list. Read the book and write a report using the following format. Book reports must be written in complete sentences and in paragraph form. Each paragraph must include at least 5 complete sentences. This book report is worth 50 points. You will be awarded 10 points per paragraph for complete sentences and complete, accurate information. Paragraph 1 should include the book title, author, setting, and a brief description of the main character or characters. Paragraph 2 should include a brief summary of the plot of the book – what happened in the story. Paragraph 3 must discuss the historical period in which the book takes place. Explain how the historical event or time period affects the main character’s life. What major events were happening when the book takes place? What was life like during that time period? In other words, show that you learned something about American History by reading this book. Paragraph 4 – Would you have wanted to live during this time period? Why or why not? What would you have like about like back then? What would you have disliked? Paragraph 5 – Give your personal opinion of the book. What parts of the story did you like? What did you dislike? Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not? 3 BOOK LIST Choose the book that interests you most from the following list.
