The program is a stand-alone curriculum. To be eligible, the individual must present with a medically diagnosed acquired brain injury resulting in total or partial loss of psychological and practical functioning. The goal of Coastline’s ABI Program is to provide neurocognitive rehabilitation and psychological services that will provide a student with brain injury the opportunity to maximize her/his abilities, regain independence, and pursue personal, academic and vocational goals. The one to two year ABI Program consists of a curriculum focused on four core areas: cognitive retraining, psychosocial adjustment, applied technology, and vocational preparation. Students come from a wide range of ethnic backgrounds and are between the ages of 18 and 80. Psychological services provided by the practicum student are neuroeducational/neuropsychological assessment and consultation, and individual, family, and couples psychotherapy. There is an opportunity for the practicum student to develop social skills group, or start a group based on his/her background and experience. Research opportunity is available. The practicum student is afforded an opportunity to gain experience into the logistics and practical aspects of providing psychological services. Practicum students review medical records and write comprehensive neuroeducational and neuropsychological examination reports. Practicum students take part in placement meetings and provide testing feedback to the student and his/her family. The practicum student has the opportunity to engage an individual in psychotherapy for the duration of their placement. The training is rigorous, intellectually challenging, and personally demanding. This practicum may appeal to students with interest in the specialty fields of Rehabilitation, Medical psychology, and Neuropsychology. Each practicum student is provided a private work space with a desktop and laptop computer, email address, and psychology scoring software. There is an excellent library of assessment instruments.
