Hearing Impaired History at PPCOC 50th Jubilee Dinner
On behalf of Hearing Impaired of PPCOC,
I want to thank God for His faithfulness to the deaf ministry at
PPCOC.
Starting in the 1970s , a deaf girl named Anna enrolled in the
Bible Correspondence course.
Upon graduation, she attended the Sunday service of the
church at Tanglin Halt to receive her certificate. Anna invited
her friends to church and soon there grew to a sizeable group.
Brother Henry saw the need to cater for these special people
and organized the “Friends of the Deaf” (“FOD”) with the help
of sister Jenny Kwa.
This new outreach opportunity spurred the Moulmein Road
Congregation in Singapore. A young leader, brother Sek San
soon learned sign language and started a regular class with a
handful of deaf people.
By the 80s, the deaf work at Tanglin Halt and Moulmein
decided to conduct their own services in sign language. This
will be different from interpreting the worship services with
the hearing congregation.
The combined congregation began worship at the premises of
the Tanglin Halt Road church building, courtesy of the Pasir
Panjang Church of Christ.
We are really thankful to the Pasir Panjang brethren as they
supported us financially and spiritually to pursue the ministry
to the deaf community.
It was a learning process; we organized many outreach
activities and workshops. God blessed us with many souls and
workers. We have many fond memories of the outings around
Singapore.
By the grace of God and Pasir Panjang brethren, the deaf
work moved to the present location at PPCOC in August 1983.
After the move, brother Patrick Ong was employed to serve as
successor to brother Sek San, who returned to Moulmein to
serve as their minister.
While there are many devoted and capable deaf members,
much of the deaf work falls into the hands of the hearing
workers.
Brother Larren Tan is a devoted Christian worker who has
given his whole hearted attention to the deaf. Several other
professionals, brothers Tony Goh, Atsushi Kanai, Mak Kok
Meng are also devoted hearing workers to the deaf.
Other godly brothers and sisters who have contributed to the
deaf ministry are Joseph Lee, Anthony Li, Lilie Ko, Rudy Lim,
Susie Tay, Tan Sok Tin, Mary Choy, Tina Kanai, Katherine Tan,
Daphne Goh, Evelyn Lim, Lim Cher Yam, Ai Tee, Tan Yiu Huat,
Alice Tan, Vincent Lim, Doreen Lim, Jim Kawi, Farida, Elder
William Wong, Hedy, Chee Keong, Tik, Agnes and Judy Ong.
Indeed God has blessed the deaf ministry, not only to reach
out to save souls, but also to bring many blessings to all who
have served in God’s kingdom work.
We attribute a large success of the deaf ministry to the good
number of godly men and women who have supported the
work in countless ways.
We need “new blood” to join the ranks of these present
laborers.
This will bring the deaf ministry to another level for God.
CONCLUSION:
Working with the deaf requires a great deal of love, patience
and commitment.
We are grateful that there were early workers like Nancy Lee,
Jenny Kwa, Ee Kai, Foo Sek San, James Lim, Ivy Lee as well
as the current workers who reach out to these precious souls.
We praise the LORD for His faithfulness and abundant
blessings.
We covet your prayers and continuous support for the deaf
ministry.
To GOD be the glory! Amen!
Thank you 
- Deacon Patrick Ong
